For the third successive season, Reading's reserve side returned to
Berkshire after collecting all three points from their trip to
Tyneside.
Their latest victory came at Newcastle's Little Benton on Monday
afternoon, both sets of players gathering round the centre circle to
hold a minute's silence for Glenn Roeder before kick-off.
The Royals went ahead through a 13th minute free kick conversion by Thierry Nevers and
that lead was doubled when
a shot from distance by Femi Azeez flew past goalkeeper Will Brown
on 25 minutes.
Top scorer Stan Flaherty then fired home in
the 52nd minute to give United a foothold in the game and the
same player was close to levelling shortly after.
However, the closest the Magpies came to earning a share of the
points was a 72nd minute effort from substitute Lucas de Bolle that
struck the goal frame.
A series of stoppages saw an additional nine minutes added, but
Reading were able to keep United out through fair means and foul -
three visiting players booked in second half added time.
Having made a scoring comeback for the U23s last week, Tom Allan was
named in the starting line-up only to be injured in the warm-up and
replaced before kick-off.
Fit-again Adam Wilson returned to action from the bench, but fellow
attackers Florent Indalecio, Yannick Toure, Rosaire Longelo and
Rodrigo Vilca were all unavailable.
Also absent was Elliot Anderson, who was reportedly omitted from the
senior squad on Saturday due to injury. It's unclear whether he'll
be fit enough to return at West Bromwich Albion on Sunday.
