Goals

2 mins Ryan Fraser found Miguel Almiron with a header towards the left hand side of the Palace area and the Paraguayan got away from Scott Dann to deliver an immediate cross that Callum Wilson fed back to Jonjo Shelvey, who was lurking just outside the D in a central position.

The midfielder netted with a shot from 20 yards that he hit down into the turf on its way inside the left hand post of the Leazes goal - Jairo Riedewald rushing towards the ball but obligingly getting out of the way of it. 1-0

21 mins Dutch midfielder Jairo Riedewald supplied an emphatic finish from similar range to Shelvey at the other end of the pitch, his effort deflecting off Ciaran Clark to give Karl Darlow no chance. 1-1

25 mins Gary Cahill was left unchecked as he headed in a free kick swung in from the Palace right by Eberechi Eze. That dead ball situation had been caused by an illegal checking of Jordan Ayew by Jamal Lewis. 1-2

We Said

Steve Bruce said:

"I was pleased with the performance, we had an awkward 15 minutes where we’ve conceded two goals from a mistake and set-piece, but apart from that, I couldn’t be more pleased with how we went about our work.

"We had the chances but we just dropped that little bit deep again and that cost us.

"I think we’ve had 20 attempts on goal and two, three, four, five in the first half when we should have been more clinical.

"Our performance levels have been better certainly over the last few weeks. We have tried to implement change in the last month or so and what you're looking for is a performance to go with it.

"As often in the Premier League, it's defining moments. Apart from that 10-15 minute spell, we had the better chances and should have taken something from the game.

"Crystal Palace do what they do and go back to defend deep so you have to prise them open.We had Ryan Fraser playing at right-back by the end to try and break them down but it was not enough.

"I said about a month ago after Sheffield United, we are going to try to change. The players had been comfortable for a long time. We are trying to change. It's what I want to do and I think the players are enjoying it.

"Performance-wise, if we keep going the way we are, we will be okay."

They Said

Roy Hodgson commented:

"It's a back-to-back win which is even harder to come by. We knew it wouldn't be easy so it's good to get six points from here [and Wolves]. But suddenly we are looking around wondering where all our players are.

"It's going to be a problem trying to get these players fit again. These injuries have to be assessed. He
[Wilfried Zaha] doesn't normally get injured so it's concerning he has come off. Hopefully it's nothing serious.

"The first half was a good half from both teams but I didn't get the impression we were too open. I thought we used the spaces to good effect. There's less pressure until Monday - that's the truthful answer, but it's nice to go into the game with Leeds six points better off than we were last Friday.

"It had the look of a very difficult spell for us so to get the six points brings a sense of relief I suppose. It's a nice feeling that the two games - two very difficult games - are behind us and we're now much further away from the teams at the bottom of the table than we were before.

"I thought
[the players] dug in extremely well. The work rate right the way through the team was tremendous. The back four were organised and disciplined. They put their bodies on the line.

"It's the type of things that win you games."

Jonjo Shelvey scored his sixteenth goal for the club in all competitions - and his ninth in the Premier League. That places him level with Faustino Asprilla, Jermaine Jenas, Peter Lovenkrands & Charles N'Zogbia.

That was only the fifth goal (out of 22) that the Magpies have scored in the first half of any PL game this season - but it certainly wasn't the fastest....

NUFC first half PL goals 2020/21:

West Bromwich Albion (h) Miguel Almiron 20 seconds
Crystal Palace (h) Jonjo Shelvey 71 seconds
Man United (h) Luke Shaw og 101 seconds
Burnley (h) Allan Saint-Maximin 14 minutes
Leeds United (a) Jeff Hendrick 26 minutes

Newcastle again failed to record back-to-back clean sheets in the PL this season. They've achieved just one shut out in their last 15 PL home games - preventing the reigning champions Liverpool from scoring. Typical.

The Magpies lost three consecutive home games for the first time since the five successive reverses that they began the 2018/19 campaign with.

They've now been beaten no less than six times at SJP in 11 PL games this season - one more than in the whole of the 2019/20 season.

After 11 PL home games, Newcastle's record doesn't compare well to the same number of games in their relegation seasons of 2009 and 2016:

2020/21: 11 points (won 3, drawn 2, lost 6) scored 12, conceded 19.
2015/16: 11 points (won 2, drawn 5, lost 4) scored 17, conceded 17.
2008/09: 16 points (won 4, drawn 4, lost 3) scored 18, conceded 19.

Isaac Hayden made his 150th competitive senior appearance for the club (118 starts) since debuting at Fulham in the Championship in August 2016.

Waffle

Despite going ahead after just 71 seconds, Newcastle saw their winless home streak extend to five games at a wet and windy Gallowgate on Tuesday night.

Seeking to build on Saturday's conquest of Everton, United got off to the perfect start when their front trio of Ryan Fraser, Miguel Almiron and Callum Wilson prompted Jonjo Shelvey to net his first PL goal of the season.

However a productive seven minute period midway through the opening half saw Roy Hodgson's side banish an away goal drought that was in excess of seven hours.

That began with Jairo Riedewald's emphatic finish from similar range to Shelvey, deflecting off Ciaran Clark to give Karl Darlow no chance.

Just four minutes later the Eagles were ahead, Gary Cahill unchecked as he headed in a free kick swung in from the visitor's right by Eberechi Eze. Cahill hadn't scored a club goal since April 2017, although he had provided the vital deflection for Joelinton's goal at Selhurst Park in November.

Palace then thought they'd gone further ahead on 27 minutes when Wilfried Zaha clipped in from close range, only to have the effort ruled out due to fellow forward Michy Batshuayi straying offside.

There was plenty action at the other end meanwhile; United having come close to opening up a two goal lead through Jeff Hendrick and Wilson.

And their efforts to level almost bore instant dividends; Fraser twice denied by Vincente Guaita before Almiron's free kick grazed the Leazes End crossbar.

Into the second half and United dominated as Palace soaked up pressure - but crucially, Guaita had far less work to do defending the Gallowgate goal.

Adding Allan Saint-Maximin, Dwight Gayle and eventually Andy Carroll failed to change the pattern greatly however; United unable to get in behind a well-drilled Palace defence aside from one fine ASM shimmy and blocked shot.

Too often we dallied on the ball and allowed the Eagles time to retreat, committing bodies forward only to then resort to sideways passing moves. That cluster of strikers were left marooned.

One last chance to salvage a point arrived in the fifth minute of added time, when Carroll reached a Jamal Lewis cross from the left but was unable to find the power to test Guaita.

By then though the destination of all three points should have been decided; former Magpie Andros Townsend guilty of missing an open goal after his side had sliced United apart on a counter-attack.

This was by no means Newcastle's worst display of the season and a draw would have been a fair outcome.

Sadly we substituted possession for penetration too often and although our goal attempt count was well up on the majority of home games, the accuracy left much to be desired, as did some ill-advised decisions to shoot from long range rather than pick out a pass.

There's little time to dwell on this game, with preparations underway for Saturday's visit of a Southampton side fresh from a nine goal mauling.

The addition of Joe Willock could be significant though in adding mobility and fluency to midfield, getting us towards the opposition box at a faster rate.

At the other end though, concerns remain over the level of defensive cover - a situation that wasn't addressed in the last transfer window, despite ongoing concerns over the fitness of Jamaal Lascelles and Federico Fernandez plus a glaring lack of options in the U23s.
