2 mins Ryan Fraser found Miguel Almiron with a header towards the left hand side of the Palace area and the Paraguayan got away from Scott Dann to deliver an immediate cross that Callum Wilson fed back to Jonjo Shelvey, who was lurking just outside the D in a central position.

The midfielder netted with a shot from 20 yards that he hit down into the turf on its way inside the left hand post of the Leazes goal - Jairo Riedewald rushing towards the ball but obligingly getting out of the way of it. 1-0

Despite going ahead after just 71 seconds, Newcastle saw their winless home streak extend to five games at a wet and windy Gallowgate on Tuesday night.

Seeking to build on Saturday's conquest of Everton, United got off to the perfect start when their front trio of Ryan Fraser, Miguel Almiron and Callum Wilson prompted Jonjo Shelvey to net his first PL goal of the season.

However a productive seven minute period midway through the opening half saw Roy Hodgson's side banish an away goal drought that was in excess of seven hours.

That began with Jairo Riedewald's emphatic finish from similar range to Shelvey, deflecting off Ciaran Clark to give Karl Darlow no chance.

Just four minutes later the Eagles were ahead, Gary Cahill unchecked as he headed in a free kick swung in from the visitor's right by Eberechi Eze. Cahill hadn't scored a club goal since April 2017, although he had provided the vital deflection for Joelinton's goal at Selhurst Park in November.

Palace then thought they'd gone further ahead on 27 minutes when Wilfried Zaha clipped in from close range, only to have the effort ruled out due to fellow forward Michy Batshuayi straying offside.

There was plenty action at the other end meanwhile; United having come close to opening up a two goal lead through Jeff Hendrick and Wilson.

And their efforts to level almost bore instant dividends; Fraser twice denied by Vincente Guaita before Almiron's free kick grazed the Leazes End crossbar.

Into the second half and United dominated as Palace soaked up pressure - but crucially, Guaita had far less work to do defending the Gallowgate goal.

Adding Allan Saint-Maximin, Dwight Gayle and eventually Andy Carroll failed to change the pattern greatly however; United unable to get in behind a well-drilled Palace defence aside from one fine ASM shimmy and blocked shot.

Too often we dallied on the ball and allowed the Eagles time to retreat, committing bodies forward only to then resort to sideways passing moves. That cluster of strikers were left marooned.

One last chance to salvage a point arrived in the fifth minute of added time, when Carroll reached a Jamal Lewis cross from the left but was unable to find the power to test Guaita.

By then though the destination of all three points should have been decided; former Magpie Andros Townsend guilty of missing an open goal after his side had sliced United apart on a counter-attack.

This was by no means Newcastle's worst display of the season and a draw would have been a fair outcome.

Sadly we substituted possession for penetration too often and although our goal attempt count was well up on the majority of home games, the accuracy left much to be desired, as did some ill-advised decisions to shoot from long range rather than pick out a pass.

There's little time to dwell on this game, with preparations underway for Saturday's visit of a Southampton side fresh from a nine goal mauling.

The addition of Joe Willock could be significant though in adding mobility and fluency to midfield, getting us towards the opposition box at a faster rate.

At the other end though, concerns remain over the level of defensive cover - a situation that wasn't addressed in the last transfer window, despite ongoing concerns over the fitness of Jamaal Lascelles and Federico Fernandez plus a glaring lack of options in the U23s.
