Following a six week festive break, Newcastle's second string resumed their league programme on Monday
on the Academy pitches at Little Benton.
And it proved to be a tale of two penalties; an early spot-kick missed by United
but the Clarets converting
theirs in the second half.
Without forward pair Yannick Toure and Rodrigo Vilca, the hosts gave
a first start to striker Florent Indalecio and he had sight of goal
on 13 minutes, but shot weakly at Clarets 'keeper Marc
Richter who saved easily.
Three minutes later Joe White was fouled on the edge of the box but Stan Flaherty's
weak effort from 12 yards was straight
at Richter - a miss that Newcastle would come to regret.
The Magpies unsurprisingly looked rusty and offered virtually
nothing going forward, save for the occasional thrust by Joe White.
Having played four games in January, Burnley began to come more into
the game after the break and striker Lewis Richardson fired narrowly
over just before the hour mark.
United failed to heed the warning though and broke the deadlock in
the 61st minute, Richardson flicked the ball past Jake Turner,
making his first U23 appearance of the season after the end of his
loan spell at Morecambe.
That lead was
doubled six minutes later when Ludwig Francillette barged over
Richardson in the area, Max Thompson thumping home the spot-kick to
seal a happy return to
his former club for coach Steve Stone - and leave Newcastle bottom
of the table.
