At the end of the rainbow over Whitley Park on Monday was a crock of
old gold, in the shape of three points for Wolves as they
strode to a deserved victory.
Beaten 0-2 by Norwich City at home a week earlier, a disjointed
Newcastle side promised little and delivered nothing - extending
their wait for a clean sheet to 12 league and cup fixtures so far
this season.
Debutant 'keeper Max Thompson denied Taylor Perry early on, but the
16 year-old Magpie was beaten by Perry from point blank range after
21 minutes - knocking home Oskar Buur's low ball across the six yard box.
With Elliot Anderson in the senior squad, trialist Cedwyn Scott
released and Florent Indalecio unselected, United's attacking duo
Yannick Toure and Rodrigo Vilca failed to make any impact against a
Wolves side beaten by Boro and the mackems in their last two games.
The game was effectively over five minutes before the break, when Meritan
Shabani strode through the home defence and fired past Thompson for
0-2.
And the visitors extended their lead further when teenage substitute
Luke Matheson finished easily on 57 minutes.
United's best chance of a consolation came 12 minutes from the end
when substitute Dylan Stephenson headed off the
crossbar following a corner.
