Despite enjoying the lion's share of possession, Newcastle's second string slipped to a deserved home defeat in Premier League 2 on Monday.

A goal in each half from Canaries full back Rob Nizet at Whitley Park ensured that the points went back to Norfolk, visiting custodian Jon McCracken busy but too often not seriously tested.

Having fielded over-age players in recent games including Paul Dummett, Henri Saivet and Achraf Lazaar, it was the turn of goalkeeper Mark Gillespie.

After just five minutes he looked set to be tested when Josh Giurgi was clear through on goal, only for the visiting forward to wastefully fire well wide.

At the other end Yannick Toure forced McCracken into a save after 21 minutes and shortly after set up Elliot Anderson to head straight into the 'keeper's arms.

It was Norwich who went in ahead against the run of play though, when a free-kick was touched on by Zach Dronfield for Nizet to fire home from distance.

The second half continued in a similar fashion; United pressing forward but failing to carve out clear opportunities and City threatening on the counter attack.

One such opportunity saw Gillespie rush off his line to block a shot from Matt Dennis on 58 minutes, defender Ludwig Francillette clearing from within the six yard box as the ball span goalwards.

Trialist striker Cedwyn Scott was withdrawn just before the hour mark in favour of winger Rosaire Longelo, but he was soon caught out by the run of Nizet to reach a crossfield pass, bursting into the box from the left before drilling a low shot in off the far post for 2-0.

In-form Newcastle youngster Anderson looked to have continued his recent scoring run in the second minute of added time but his header from Longelo's right wing cross was ruled out for offside.
