Achraaf Lazaar was included as an over-age player for Newcastle while
home boss
Ian Evatt made 11 changes from the starting line-up that beat Salford
2-0 in their most recent League Two game.
Newcastle Reserves ended their Papa John's Trophy campaign on
Tuesday evening with a narrow defeat at the University of Bolton
Stadium.
The Magpies had built up a 2-0 lead just before half time, but were
unable to hold on to that and went behind five minutes from the
final whistle.
Despite the outcome though, the game provided an opportunity
for Elliot Anderson to showcase his talents - and the 18
year-old duly delivered.
Wearing the Captain's armband, Elliot shot home to give
his side an 11th minute lead, having earlier sent one effort from
distance just over the bar.
Close to a second after good work from Yannick Toure just before the
half hour, Elliot plundered his fourth goal in just three games on
40 minutes - coolly lobbing Trotters 'keeper Billy Crellin.
Bolton got one back a minute before the interval through Jak Hickman
and Dan Langley picked the ball out of his net again on the hour,
substitute Arthur Gnahoua netting within five minutes of his
introduction.
Searching for his hat-trick, Anderson carved out two further
shooting chances but it was Toure with the best opportunity to
restore United's lead - rounding Crellin on 75 minutes but missing
the target.
Anderson was replaced on 80 minutes, before Jamie Mascoll forced a
rebound home to put Bolton ahead for the first time in the tie with
five minutes of normal time remaining.
United were unable to find an equaliser to take the tie to penalties, finishing bottom of the table with zero points from three
games as a consequence.
United's defence may have been below par, but the night belonged to
Anderson; training with the first team, on the bench in the League
Cup at Newport and now advancing his claims for a substitute role
when Newcastle return to Premier League action on Sunday.
Live coverage was again available via the EFL's ifollow streaming
service, for £10 per game.
