Elliot Anderson celebrated his 18th birthday and a new professional contract
on Friday, scoring from the spot and inspiring Newcastle U23s to an unlikely
but memorable victory over high-flying Leeds United at Whitley Park.
Following successive away defeats at West Bromwich Albion and
Reading, the Magpies came back from being three goals down to steal the in
added time, substitute Stan Flaherty grabbing the dramatic late winner.
A three-goal blast during a ten minute spell appeared to have settled the
contest in favour of the visitors just past the half hour mark, only for the
hosts to quickly reduce the deficit.
Joe Gelhardt set up the first Leeds goal in the 21st minute with a cross
from the left which Liam McCarron lashed in. And McCarron soon scored again,
this time heading home Stuart McKinstry's pinpoint cross from the right.
Niall Huggins was then fouled as he shaped to shoot on the half hour
and Gelhardt converted from the spot, although Dan Langley almost kept it
out.
Yannick Toure - who had struck the woodwork at 0-0 - headed home an
Anderson corner unopposed for Newcastle within two minutes and Leeds had an
effort from Bobby Kamwa ruled out for offside before half-time.
The second half was comparatively uneventful until the 71st minute, when
visiting goalkeeper Elia Caprile upended trialist forward Cedwyn Scott and
conceded a penalty that Anderson converted with power and precision.
The comeback looked on at 2-3 and just two minutes later the scores were
tied, as Flaherty's cross from the right was bundled home by a defender
under pressure from Scott.
A draw would have been an excellent result but with Leeds pushing forward to
restore their lead, home substitute Flaherty cut in from the right and
coolly placed his low shot inside the far post to complete the turnaround.
