There was a first reserve start for Rodrigo Vilca and debuts from the
bench for defensive duo Bradley Cross and Joe Oliver.
Newcastle's reserve
side came from behind to claim all three points at St. James' Park
on Monday, late strikes by Yannick Toure
and Stan Flaherty eclipsing Jean-Pierre Tiehi's first half opener
for the Cottagers.
The game was switched from Whitley Park, with a trio of first
teamers,
one old face and
two newish signings among those selected for the hosts.
Ciaran
Clark, Paul Dummett and Matty Longstaff were included in the
starting selection after they recovered from injury, while Achraaf
Lazaar made a rare and uneventful appearance in a black and white shirt.
Peruvian prospect Rodrigo Vilca debuted after joining from Deportivo
Municipal earlier this month, while South African-born central
defender Bradley Cross started on the bench after his recent
capture.
Fulham arrived having won both of their previous away games, but created
little and were only ahead thanks to a dreadful back pass that Tiehi latched
on to inside the Newcastle box in the 27th minute.
Finding a team mate with his pass, the French teenager anticipated Dan
Langley's parry of the shot and returned the rebound, beating the goalkeeper
at his near post.
Longstaff completed 45 minutes as scheduled before making way for
teenage debutant defender Joe Oliver, while Clark and Dummett both
managed an hour before they were replaced - Cross making his bow at
that point.
Going into the final quarter of the game United continued to trail,
coming closest to an equaliser when Stan Flaherty saw his 62nd
minute shot rebound off the inside of a post.
Chris Hogg's side did draw level with 11 minutes
remaining, when striker Yannick Toure grabbed his first of the
season from Flaherty's centre.
Toure came close to an immediate second as United piled on the
pressure, but could only ping his first-time effort off the legs of
goalkeeper Wickens.
Flaherty himself then fired home an 87th minute winner - his third goal of
the season, picking up a loose ball outside the Fulham box, running infield
and looping home a fine left foot strike for a third goal in as many starts.
