United's U21s lost their opening EFL Trophy
tie against the League One Shrews on Tuesday,
going down by three goals as they did there in 2019.
The hosts went ahead when Scott High shot home after 11 minutes and
doubled their advantage seven minutes later after Ryan Barnett
headed beyond Will Brown.
Between those two goals, Newcastle were forced into a change when
stand-in left Adam Wilson was injured and made way for Dylan Stephenson.
Town then went further ahead
on 55 minutes, when Jason Cummings had a simple finish following a
corner kick.
The Magpies did get the ball in the net during added time, but
captain Ludwig Francillette's effort was ruled out for an earlier
infringement.
There was a reserve team debut for 17 year-old midfielder Reagan
Thomson (pictured), signed from Scottish side Queens Park earlier this year.
This was the first of three group stage games that Chris Hogg's side
will play - all away from home - with visits to Crewe and
Bolton to follow.
Live coverage of all is available via the EFL's ifollow streaming
service, for the princely sum of £10 per game. Even idiots like us
chose not to subscribe.....
