Newcastle's second string began their Premier League 2 Division 2 fixtures with a draw against their Teesside counterparts on Friday afternoon.

The game was played behind closed doors at Little Benton; Magpies coach Chris Hogg assisted for the first time in a competitive game by old boy Peter Ramage.

The visitors took the lead in the tenth minute from the penalty spot after a foul in the area by Oisin McEntee on Isiah Jones, Ben Liddle firing past Dan Langley. And Boro should have doubled their advantage five minutes later, but their striker blazed over when well placed.

United came back into the contest and both Adam Wilson and Yannick Toure saw shots smothered by 'keeper Zach Hemming before the half hour mark.

And on 34 minutes the Magpies equalised when Ryan Barrett's deep cross from the left was headed on by a defender and fell into the path of Niall Brookwell, who took a touch before beating Hemming at his near post.

Elliot Anderson then put Newcastle ahead six minutes later, turning to fire home via the 'keeper after Jack Young's crossfield pass picked out Rosaire Longelo on the right and he evaded two covering players before crossing.

United looked to have extended their lead in the 64th minute when Wilson fired in from close range but the linesman's flag was raised.

And that decision proved to be costly when Boro went straight up the pitch and levelled through Jones, whose first effort bounced back to him off Langley and allowed him to finish at the second attempt.

There were half-chances at both ends, but neither side could summon up a winner - Newcastle's Jack Young firing over the cross bar in the 88th minute.

In addition to a competitive reserve bow for Niall Brookwell, fellow midfielder Stan Flaherty made his first appearance at this level, from the bench.

However, striker Elias Sorensen was suspended following a red card in the penultimate league game of last season - way back in February.
