There was a successful return to Tyneside for
Steve Watson and his Minstermen on Saturday, as United's U23
side played their second and final pre-season friendly.
Clad in their new violet change strip, United were forced into an
early change when left back Oliver Walters limped off, to be
replaced by Lewis Cass.
The National League North visitors opened the scoring from their
first meaningful attack, a trialist weaving through the home defence
before shooting low past Dan Langley.
That's how it stayed at half time, with Newcastle on top but unable
to find the net - Elias Sorensen seeing two efforts beaten away by
the goalkeeper before striking the underside of the crossbar.
York then extended their lead just 80 seconds into the second half
when newly-arrived substitute Olly Dyson diverted a right wing cross home.
United reduced the deficit on 50 minutes when a routine shot from
substitute Elliot Anderson was spilled by the visiting goalkeeper,
presenting Adam Wilson with the simplest of finishes.
Anderson then threatened again soon after with an elongated run into
the box, only for his eventual shot to pose no threat.
Following a further round of replacements by the home side, City
restored their two goal advantage on 64 minutes after a dreadful goalkeeping
error allowed Rob Guilfoyle's shot to cross the goal line.
And United's misery was complete with 10 minutes remaining, when trialist
Guilfoyle fired home from just inside the area - City confirming post-match
that the 18 year-old had signed a permanent deal at his hometown club.
