Colin Odutayo

Florent Indalecio

The first trialist was subsequently named by the Chronicle as winger Colin Odutayo, a 19 year-old Dutchman released by Aston Villa earlier this year.

Odutayo appeared against the Magpies when they lost 2-3 at Villa Park last November. Following his Magpies trial, he reportedly moved on to train with Championship side Sheffield Wednesday.

And the Chronicle also divulged the identity of the second trialist, fellow free agent Florent Indalecio. The 23 year-old French-born forward was with St. Etienne as a youngster before being discarded in 2011 - at about the time that Allan Saint-Maximin was with the same club (which may explain why ASM was watching here today).

Diagnosed with a cancerous tumour on his knee, Flo made a failed attempt to restart his career in the USA before playing amateur football back in France. Pre-lockdown he'd been in Australia, working on a building site and turning out for a local side.

Chris Hogg's U23s were held by National League side Hartlepool United in a kickabout at Little Benton on Monday, the first game that both sides have played ahead of the new season.

And for the black and whites it was a first return to action since their 2-0 pre-lockdown success at Middlesbrough back in February.

Three of the players in action that day - Mo Sangare, Tom Allan and Jake Turner have departed on season-long loans, while Liam Gibson has left the club permanently.

The other seven from February's starting line-up were involved at various points today, but sadly there was still no place for long-term injury victim Owen Bailey.

Newcastle went ahead thanks to a third minute spot kick conversion from Elias Sorensen after one of the two trialists in the home side was upended in the box by a 'Pools player.

However the visitors recovered strongly in the second half and deservedly levelled on 88 minutes, recent signing Claudio Ofosu volleying home.

The Magpies fielded recent signing Niall Brookwell - a midfielder formerly with Liverpool's Academy. 'Pools meanwhile included SJP old boy Ryan Donaldson in their starting line-up.
