Andy Carroll supplied a notable bit of juggling and finish
from just inside the Alex area, following a
ball forward by Jamaal Lascelles. The striker took the ball on his chest,
headed it and then flicked it up for his left foot to hook it past the 'keeper.

Steve Bruce said:
"We are here for fitness levels so we have given everyone 45 minutes.
"Everything went well in terms of how they went about their work but the
disappointing thing is Dwight has picked up a knock - we hope that's not too
serious."
On the training camp:
"Everything went well - it's put an end to a decent five or six days. Coming to an end of our trip in York we're very happy with it.
On Andy Carroll:
"He was very, very good and scored a goal. It was the Andy Carroll of old, the
goal. We know his qualities and the big thing is to stay well and to stay fit.
"He's worked ever so hard. Probably lockdown helped him and touch wood, he looks
good."
On Dan Barlaser:
"For Dan, we always wanted to have a look at him. He's had a really good look
at Rotherham and he's done OK."

Jacob Murphy (wearing the 23
shirt) was involved in his first senior Magpies game since
a home friendly against St. Etienne 12 months ago.
Henri Saivet (wearing the 28 shirt) meanwhile hasn't been seen in a Newcastle shirt
since the most recent of his eight competitive outings in January
2018 - an FA Cup defeat at Chelsea.
Dan Barlaser (wearing the 32 shirt) made a first senior appearance for United since the last of his three
competitive outings for the club - the 2-3 home League Cup loss to
Nottingham Forest back in
August 2017.
While 23 year-old Barlaser has a chance of making the Magpies squad
for the coming season, Saivet's
future lies away from SJP as he enters the final year of his
contract.
Andy Carroll's last goal of any kind for the club before
today was in a 1-3 Premier League home defeat by
Manchester City on Boxing Day 2010.
This was the first senior game between these two sides since
September 1991,
when a two-legged League Cup tie saw United fall 0-3 behind after
just 22 minutes at Gresty Road before recovering to win 4-3. Newcastle then
triumphed 1-0 at SJP in the second leg.
More recently, United's U21s won 2-1 at Crewe against their
first team in a Checkatrade Trophy tie in 2017.
The Magpies second string return to Crewe later this year in
the same competition, re-branded as the EFL Trophy.
With one game yet to be confirmed but COVID travel and quarantine
restrictions a major factor, this looks like being the first pre-season since 2007 that
Newcastle have been restricted to purely domestic fixtures.
That comprised a six game series of warm-up games for incoming
manager Sam Allardyce, with trips to
Carlisle, Hartlepool and Hull accompanied by a trio of kickabouts at SJP.

Just 30 days after their final game of the
2019/20 season, Newcastle began their on-field preparations for the next
campaign on Tuesday afternoon, scoring three goals without reply against League One
opposition.
The first of those goals came from Andy Carroll, netting for the first time since rejoining the
club a year ago. However, the fragility of our forward line was
highlighted when Dwight Gayle had to leave the field through injury.
Last season's COVID-imposed fixture break benefited Gayle, who returned to
fitness in time to net four times in the closing ten league and Cup games.
His form at the club's training camp had earned praise from Steve Bruce, but
in classic Magpies style Gayle lasted less than 20 minutes on the field
before limping off with what was claimed to be a knee injury.
That came with Newcastle 2-0 up, Carroll's individual effort on 39 minutes
followed by Christian Atsu's firm shot two minutes into the second period.
The black and whites fielded a completely different XI for the
second half, but were forced to re-use Dan Barlaser following the loss of
Gayle. He then supplied the corner kick from which Federico Fernandez headed
in a third.
The margin of victory could have been greater; Paul Dummett seeing his
25-yarder glance off the woodwork with the game scoreless and
Jonjo Shelvey twice hitting the crossbar from dead ball strikes with
the score at 2-0.
Fit-again defensive trio Jamaal Lascelles, Ciaran Clark and Paul Dummett
all successfully completed 45 minutes as 22 players were given pitch time
including Matty Longstaff - a belated arrival after agreeing his new deal.
Goalkeeper Mark Gillespie debuted, while fellow new
face Jeff Hendrick didn't feature.
Not playing but present were Martin Dubravka and Matt Ritchie, but Joelinton, Yoshinori Muto
and Fabian Schar were all absent.
The Swiss defender is recovering from shoulder surgery less than a month,
but nothing has been said officially about the whereabouts of the two
alleged forwards, leading to unsubstantiated claims that the Brazilian is
shielding after returning home from a post-season trip overseas.
Bruce and his squad returned to Tyneside following this game and now host
Barnsley at the training ground on Saturday, the Championship side beating
Crewe 2-0 in a kickabout last week.
In addition to the striker shortage that the Gayle injury highlights yet
again, it's also sobering to reflect that the Newcastle players will be
preparing at facilities inferior to those they've enjoyed in the last week.
Never mind a takeover, we've not even bothered with a makeover.
