Javier Manquillo directed his thrown-in from the halfway line down the right
flank towards Andy Carroll - on the field just four minutes after replacing
Joelinton. Carroll trapped the ball and turned after covering defender Matt
Targett jumped unsuccessfully. Initial suspicions that he was fouled weren't
backed up by replays or any appeal from the visiting player and it actually
appears that Carroll was shoved forward by Tyrone Mings.
83 mins 13 minutes after coming on, substitute Conor Hourihan
flighted an outswinging left footed flag kick from the North
West Corner towards the near post. The ball arced away from Miguel Almiron
and allowed a grounded Ahmed Elmohamady to direct a flicked header goalwards
from the angle of the six yard box, six minutes after his own introduction
from the bench.
Steve Bruce said: "I didn’t think we got to the levels we did at the
weekend but the disappointing and frustrating thing for us is that after
getting in front and not seeing it through. "To give a soft goal, that’s the frustration because we
haven’t hit the heights of what we did at the weekend. We had a great chance
at winning the match and didn’t see it through. "It’s difficult times, we must not forget that the players, yes we’ve been training to a degree, haven’t been doing a lot for three months. "Treadmills, running on streets and in the park is not
the actual thing of playing physically in a football match. "Of course I think a lot of El Mohamady... but maybe I should have left him in Egypt all those years ago! "How often does it happen?
But we’re disappointed in the nature of it. It’s the first goal we’ve
conceded in five games, so to not see it through and concede a goal like
that, we’ve got to be disappointed. On Carroll and Gayle: "All of the squad are going to be important because
we’re going to pick up a few niggles. It’s great to have the two of them
available. "All through his career, we’ve always known Dwight was a goalscorer. I’m pleased for him tonight. "I’ve said on record that I’ve tried to buy him three
times. If you’re looking in the Championship, the first one on your list was
always Dwight Gayle because of his natural finishing. "He’s got the knack, and when you’ve got that, it’s
invaluable. Let’s hope he stays fit.” "They’re both soft tissue (injuries). We’ll have to
wait and see, but the pair of them are genuine and honest, so for them to
come off…
Dean Smith said: "It feels like two points dropped. We weren’t clinical enough. I’m little bit annoyed, especially with the goal we conceded. "Our defensive display has been good again, with the exception of one player going to sleep, Ezri Konsa has lost concentration, Gayle’s gone into the area he should be in and… "We did some video work on it earlier, I’ve just had a bit of a pop at him in the dressing room, but listen, he’s a young lad and he’s learning, but he needs to know how important concentration is at this level and the situation we’re in at the moment. "(I'm) annoyed because there were large periods where I thought we played really well, especially the first half. We’ve had chances - Ally’s had a really good chance from a header, Trez has had a chance at the far post, John McGinn’s had a chance with a header, I thought we caused them problems by shifting the ball wide and getting balls in behind them. "We’ve got to be more clinical. But, to be fair, I think Newcastle started the second half brighter, put us under a bit more pressure but the defenders stood firm again and then unfortunately… "Overall, the feeling is a little bit disappointed because our performance probably deserved a bit better. "We were making that change to get two up front with
Ally and Keinan, we just felt that would be the way forward with Jack
playing off them, and that’s the way it ended up going at the end of the
game.
A late lapse in concentration by Newcastle denied them their third
successive league victory on Wednesday, after Dwight Gayle
had put them ahead. |
