Friday saw United's second string in Premier League Cup action at Whitley Park, where a patchy display allowed their lower league visitors to leave with a point that could even have been three.

After a fairly uneventful (dull) opening period when both sides struggled to keep their footing on the surface, United were awarded a penalty in the 37th minute when Kelland Watts was bundled over by City's Matty Jacob.

Tom Allan made no mistake from the spot to give the home side the lead, reaching double figures for the season in the same week that his senior debut arrived.

The contest livened up around the hour mark when Hull's Norbert Balogh attempted to lob Jake Turner but the 'keeper got a hand to it enabling a defender to clear.

A minute later a good move between Jack Young and Allan saw the goalscorer send over a low cross that Elias Sorensen somehow managed to knock over the crossbar from inside the six yard box.

That miss proved costly when the visitors were level in the 66th minute after some hesitation in the box allowed Danny Lupano to head in from close range after a cross from the left had been nodded back across the six yard box by Billy Chadwick.

United almost responded immediately when Victor Fernandez centred from the left for newly-arrived substitute Yannick Toure to head over from a great position.

Seven minutes from the end Tigers' Elliot Bonds hit the post and then United were reduced to ten men a minute from the end, defender Ludwig Francillette receiving a second yellow card.

Ben Dawson's side came under pressure in five additional minutes, but with the last kick they came close to winning it; Fernandez's cross to the back post just beyond substitute Adam Wilson.

The point leaves United second in their group - albeit having played more games than their three rivals. Eight group winners and eight runners-up progress to the knockout stages, with United in Group C which currently stands as follows:
