mins David
Silva drove into the Newcastle box and was tackled by Isaac Hayden. The ball
ricocheted to Sterling, back to Silva and then the Spaniard's back heel set up
Raheem Sterling, whose low shot from around 12 yards found the corner of the Gallowgate goal.

Almiron
down the progressed down the left and laid the ball back to Paul Dummett who found
Jetro Willems on the edge
of the area. He exchanged passes with Almiron before taking advantage of the
space to steady himself before firing a low drive beyond Ederson. 1-1

Substitute Phil Foden passed to Benjamin
Mendy and when
his cross from the left was headed clear by Dummett, Kevin De Bruyne chested the ball
down before hammering a volley past Martin Dubravka and in off the bar. The Belgian
chose to celebrate with what appeared to be a masturbatory gesture towards the
United 'keeper.

88 mins
Fernandinho (who should have
received a second yellow for it) upended Javier Manquillo on the right edge of the area.
Substitute Christian Atsu spotted the unmarked Jonjo Shelvey and without
further ado rolled the ball into his path. The Magpies Captain unleashed a perfect
curler beyond Ederson into the far corner before celebrating in front of the
home dugout.

Steve Bruce said:
"It took them a wonder goal for all the possession they had. We
produced a bit of magic ourselves too, but of course we had to defend and I
think the players were magnificent in their work.
"They’ve got a good attitude. We’ve got that horrible one in us - we
can be inconsistent.
"Today, they were manful in their work - they had to run a
million miles against a quality team. I was delighted with their attitude.
"I think the whole crowd, with (Miguel) Almiron, they sense it as much as he does.
When he gets in front of goal they’re willing it in for him. Last January, Almiron lifted this club... he was terrific. I inherited
him in the summer and he’s a great lad.
"Almiron was outstanding. And (Alain) Saint-Maximin - the way we play is
difficult for them because we’re 50, 60 yards away from goal when they pick
it up. I'm delighted for Miggy. He's got an assist - great goal from
Jetro.
"We've seen three quality goals and we've got two of them, so it was
lovely to watch.
"We go
up and down too easily, especially away from home. We have to improve.
Consistency is what we're striving for. We have to keep working at it and keep
plodding away.
"The team, I believe, is suited to be set up the way we are. There’ll
come a day when we’re higher up the pitch."
On Jonjo Shelvey:
"We put him back in for West Ham and he
scored and made one and he did very, very well (and) played
very, very well against Bournemouth.
"The whole team didn’t play well against Aston Villa and of course Jonjo
always seems to me, is the one that’s the enemy. So, I’m delighted for him.
"There’s few people on the pitch that
can score a goal like he did today - or few on the pitch who can find a pass
like he did today. And physically, his workrate and attitude to what we need,
was good to see.”
Goalscorer
and programme cover star Jonjo
Shelvey added:
"I
might be a hero at Liverpool now!
'But no it's about us (Newcastle), we
need to get as many points on the board and guarantee the safety of this
football club in the Premier League.
"We
worked our socks off, each one of us put in the 110%.
"When we had possession, we did well
and we defended for our lives. You could see the defenders putting their bodies
on the line. We do a lot of running during the week, but on the pitch, the only
time we have been defeated was when the other teams outworked us.
"That of course can't happen and if we feel we can run more than the other
team, we'll always have a chance in the game.
I saw they were sitting deep and I asked (Christian)
Atsu to cut the ball back to me. It was always drifting away from the keeper. I
know I can do that - I do it in training quite regularly - but it's important to
do it in a match and that secured us a point."
Pep Guardiola said:
"We played at a good level. It was not
easy because they defended deep. We scored two goals but we also let two
in which is disappointing.
"With substitutions sometimes players forget positions. We found a way
to get through but unfortunately at the end we conceded a goal. There
are teams that defend deeper like this, it happens all season.
On Newcastle's safety-first tactics:
"It’s what we've lived the last four
years. We found a way and today, we found it again. but unfortunately, at the
end, we conceded a goal.
"There are teams who play higher or deeper - not all teams play the same
way. We play the same way as last season. The way we played today was at that
level.
"We could not score all the chances we had; they scored the two chances
they had. Sometimes it happens. The score at 1-2 in the last minutes, we
conceded free kick we could have avoided. The quality from (Jonjo)
Shelvey made a difference.
"We played well, and (Martin) Dubravka made good saves. We arrived
in front of the ball many times, unfortunately, we could not score. Last season,
we played badly. We played poorer than today.
"The tempo was good all the time. We
had to move the ball across more, but in general we did well. They played like
this against Tottenham, United… today, we found more space to do that.
"We have to accept it, work on our strengths and learn from this. It’s
tough, but we have just two days to recover. It is important that in good
moments, we are calm and in bad moments, you have to live them and learn from
them.”
Two games unbeaten
represents our best result sequence against Manchester City since 2005
(including both home and away games).
The Magpies are unbeaten in the last six home PL games (two wins,
four draws), which is their longest run since the 2017/18 season (a run
of seven between December and April).
Jetro Willems netted his second goal of the season after his effort at
Anfield in September.
Jonjo Shelvey now has five PL goals to his name for United, three of
which have come this season. After strikes at Leicester, Fulham, Norwich and
West Ham this was his first on home ground - although he has previously netted
at SJP in both Championship and FA Cup fixtures.
His most prolific season as a Magpie to date brought him five Championship
goals in 2016/17, but Shelvey is still some way off his best season in
front of goal - eight during the 2011/12 campaign shared between Blackpool
(six) and Liverpool (two). His highest PL tally in a season is six,
achieved while playing for Swansea City in 2013/14.
Newcastle recovered from going a goal behind to avoid defeat for the third
time at Gallowgate this season, following on from Watford (drew 1-1) and
Bournemouth (won 2-1).
Just two of the side that started January's 2-1 victory over Manchester
City retained their place today; Martin Dubravka and Isaac Hayden.
Christian Atsu started in January and came off the bench today and Javier
Manquillo was a late substitute in the first game and started the second.

For the second time in 2019, Manchester City's visit to St. James' Park proved
to be anything but a foregone conclusion; Pep Guardiola's side going ahead
again only to be pegged back not once, but twice this time.
And if this wasn't quite as earth-shattering as our 2-1 win in
January, then a thoroughly deserved draw was an enormous confidence booster
for Steve Bruce's side after Monday's non-performance.
A fine late strike from Kevin De Bruyne looked to have secured victory for the
current Champions - only for Jonjo Shelvey to hit an even better effort two minutes from time to earn a
point.
He capped a disciplined display with a wonderful
curling shot beyond Edison and into the Gallowgate goal, after substitute Christian Atsu
played a
free-kick into his path. That was enough to extend our unbeaten home record to six
Premier League games since Arsenal's opening weekend success.
Shelvey's third goal in his last nine league outings made him his side's
current top scorer,
as United's front trio once again failed to provide a scoring threat.
Raheem Sterling gave City the lead midway through the first half, but Jetro Willems
drove in just three minutes later from Miguel Almiron's pass -
the Paraguayan's first assist as a Magpie.
The home players were grateful to Martin Dubravka for a handful of good saves,
notably one double block to deny both Gabriel Jesus and De Bruyne with the
score at 1-1.
When De Bruyne lashed home via the underside of the crossbar on 82 minutes
though, United's chances of taking anything from this game looked
remote.
The replacement of Joelinton by Dwight Gayle earlier in the half had seen no
real change to our ploy of humping high balls forward on those occasions when
we were able to go on the offensive.
Thankfully though, the one chance that did arise saw them exploit rather than
waste a free kick, Shelvey waving and blowing kisses at his wife, celebrating
her birthday in the Milburn Stand.
Newcastle also rode their luck: Bernado Silva missing the
target when well-placed and Sterling unmarked in the area with just seconds
left but shooting weakly at Dubravka. On another day - perhaps with the
thankfully absent Sergio Aguero playing - they could have won handsomely.
In stark contrast to the 0-2 defeat at Aston Villa there were strong
performances across the field from United, notably Federico Fernandez
and Ciaran Clark.
Once again, Bruce's side raised their energy levels and concentration to
counter the threat of their illustrious opponents; content to stay solid and threaten on the
counter-attack.
It's those occasions when more creativity and initiative is demanded of them that
seem to be more problematic. Which Newcastle will turn up at Bramall Lane on
Thursday? it won't be one with Andy Carroll - who is set to be missing for
at least the next two games through injury.
Rising two places at full time, United had slipped back to fourteenth by the
end of the weekend.
