Newcastle's reserve side broke new ground on Friday night when overcoming their Hull City counterparts 1-0 in a Premier League Cup tie at the East Riding FA pitches on Humberside..

Visiting striker Luke Charman fired in a late penalty to give United victory in the Premier League Cup Group C opener against Professional Development League opposition.

Coach Neil Redfearn made four changes to the starting lineup that lost 0-1 to Swansea City in League 2 on Monday; Owen Bailey, Mo Sangare, Rosaire Longelo and Kyle Scott standing down.

Their places were taken by Oisin McEntee, debutant central defender Ludwig Francillette and Academy duo Joe White and Elliot Anderson - both making their first starts at U23 level.

In a goalless first half, United's best move ended with Anderson pulling the ball across to Joe White who clipped a low effort wide of the target in the 22nd minute.

Four minutes later Charman's shot was blocked by a defender and when the ball was returned into the box, Anderson made space to shoot but was high and wide.

The black and whites emerged for the second half without Francillette, Lewis Cass moving across from right back into central defence and Jamie Sterry going to right back after having played 45 minutes in an unfamiliar central midfield role. Spanish winger Victor Fernandez was introduced.

A minute before the hour Tom Allan's header was directed at the goalkeeper from point blank range was deflected away as United threatened to break the deadlock.

They came close again in the 67th minute when a good interception from Jamie Sterry saw him set up Charman whose deflected shot brought a fingertip save from the 'keeper.

United introduced 16 year-old midfielder Dylan Stephenson from the bench for his reserve debut five minutes later but clear-cut chances remained at a premium despite the lions' share of possession.  

Seven minutes from the end, Hull's Matty Jacob bundled over Sterry in the box and Charman's rising effort from the spot into the roof of the net got his side off to a winning start in the competition.

This was the first of six games in Group C of this competition for Newcastle, with home and away meetings against West Bromwich Albion and Scunthorpe United in addition to the Tigers.
