Looking
for their third successive league victory, Newcastle's U23 side lost to their
West Bromwich Albion counterparts on Monday afternoon, beaten by almost the last
kick of the match.
The game at the Baggies' training ground saw the Magpies include midfielder
Matty Longstaff for the first time at U23 level this season, following his
promotion to the senior squad.
Albion meanwhile took full advantage of the over-age player rules by including 37 year-old Ali Al-Habsi, 34 year-old Chris Brunt, 30
year-old Hal Robson-Kanu and 28 year-old Ahmed Hegazy.
Scoreless at the interval, the hosts went ahead through Robson-Kanu on 50
minutes, but almost immediately United midfielder Jack Young was impeded in the
area by Jack Fitzwater and a penalty kick was awarded.
Up stepped Tom Allan to net his fourth goal of the season, on the occasion of
his 20th birthday.
Seeking to regain the lead, Robson-Kanu was denied his second of the game by
visiting goalkeeper Dan Langley on 80 minutes.
However Langley could do nothing to prevent the much-travelled striker netting
in the second minute of added time, a fraction before the referee blew the final
whistle.
