United's
second string earned their first home win since March on Monday, as Neil
Redfearn's side overcame Norwich City by the odd goal in five at Whitley Park.
Visiting goalkeeper Archie Mair kept his side on level terms just after the
half hour, making a double stop to deny first Jack Young then Rosaire Longelo.
However he was helpless to prevent Longelo's fine long range strike on 36
minutes and within five minutes Luke Charman burst into the box and fired in
via the post.
The Canaries halved the deficit two minutes into added time, when Dan Adshead
neatly steered a left wing centre from Aidan Fitzpatrick beyond Dan Langley
and into the bottom corner.
Seconds
after the restart, Longelo raced away down the left and was cynically taken
out by goalkeeper Mair who was fortunate only to be booked.
Newcastle came close to restoring their two goal advantage when Yannick Toure
was denied by a defensive interception and Tom Allan shot just wide.
City got back on terms in the 64th minute through Isak Thorsvasldsson,
hammering the ball into the roof of the net following Tom Scully's corner.
United scored what proved to be the winner with 17 minutes of normal time
remaining, Jamie Sterry's deep cross from the right flank reaching Allan, who
finished well for his third goal of the season.
An entertaining game concluded with City seeking another
equaliser; coming closest in added time when Ciaren Jones poked a first-time
effort just past the post following Tom Scully's free kick.
