Pointless after their
opening three games, Newcastle's second string broke their duck against the
Cottagers at Motspur Park on Friday afternoon - their second successive
victory at that venue.
Trailing 0-1 at the break - although Fulham were down to ten men by that
point - a second half brace from substitute Tom Allan ensured a first
competitive victory for U23 coach Neil Redfearn.
United welcomed back Owen Bailey after completing a suspension for his
dismissal earlier in the season, but fellow defender Oisin McEntee was still
missing following his own red card offence.
In bright sunshine, the hosts went ahead on 21 minutes when Sonny Hilton
beat Magpies 'keeper Jake Turner. Defender Jerome Opoku then found his way
into the referee's notebook shortly after and was dismissed just on half
time following a second booking for a deliberate handball.
Clad in their orange change kit, Newcastle began the second half with Tom
Allan in their lineup and he took just six minutes to level from the penalty
spot.
Fulham had the chance to retake the lead on 65 minutes when they were
awarded a penalty of their own, but Ryan De Havilland's effort smashed off
the crossbar and harmlessly away.
Looking to make their man advantage count, Newcastle were unable to find a
way past 'keeper Luca Ashby-Hammond until Allan latched on to Yannick
Toure's pass and shot home with 12 minutes left.
