It's now played two lost two for Newcastle's
second string, after they surrendered an early lead at Whitley Park on
Saturday. And to make matters worse for the hosts, defender Oisin McEntee saw red near
the end, having earlier netted what proved to be the West Ham
winner.
The Magpies started well enough in blustery but sunny conditions and very nearly
took the lead inside the first five minutes, Victor Fernandez's shot hitting
the inside of the right hand post and coming back into play before being cleared.
Undeterred, Newcastle came back to deservedly take the lead in the eighth
minute. The ball broke to Jamie Sterry in the right
hand corner of the box and he took one touch before placing a perfect shot across the
‘keeper into the far corner of the net; a peach of a goal.
But West Ham responded and gradually gained control of the
game. They had the ball in the home net when Daniel Kemp
netted from a rebound that fell to him after a rocket of a shot hit Jake
Turner in the chest, only for the forward to be given offside.
The visitors deservedly equalised in the 35th minute when a left wing corner
flew across the six yard box to Joe Powell who powered an effort at goal.
Turner managed to get a touch but could only help the ball into the roof of
the net.
And the Hammers went in at half time one up, thanks to a
ludicrous 42nd minute goal that stemmed from an optimistic high ball into
the Newcastle from the left wing. Defender McEntee and goalkeeper Turner both hesitated,
before the former decided to clear the danger. Unfortunately though, his
toe-poke went the
wrong side of a post from close range and registered an own goal.
To make matters worse, the Irish youth international was later shown a straight red card following an off the ball incident
that left visiting striker Oladapo Afolayan prone on the deck.
The second half was fairly even; West Ham more composed but Newcastle
creating better chances. Magpies skipper Luke Charman almost grabbed an equaliser
on the hour mark with a determined run at goal under pressure. His shot from
well inside the area was decent enough but Anang pulled off an excellent
save, diving low down to his left.
The Hammers’ ‘keeper denied both Jack Young and Charman again in the closing
stages but Newcastle couldn't breach the visitors’ defence and remain
pointless after their opening two games - their worst start to a season since
2008.
There was a competitive debut from the bench at this level for 16 year-old
midfielder Joe White, who appeared for the U23s in pre-season. Meanwhile
former Hammer Rosaire Longelo came up against his old club, whose line-up
included younger brother, Emmanuel.
Many thanks to AC.
