Newcastle's U23 side lost their final pre-season friendly on Tuesday afternoon, beaten by their Barnsley counterparts at Oakwell Academy.

Goalkeeper Jake Turner was beaten after 11 minutes of his United debut, when Sam Fielding was left to head in unchallenged following a corner kick.

Things then got worse for the visitors midway through the opening half, when Oisin McEntee slashed the ball into his own net while attempting a clearance.

The Magpies improved towards the interval and after Elias Sorensen saw a 41st minute effort ruled out for offside, the Dane reduced the arrears two minutes later when chesting down a free kick and firing home.

That revival then gathered pace in the second half, with recent arrival Kyle Scott coming off the bench and immediately showing up well in central midfield.

It should also be noticed that the hosts made multiple substitutions of their own at half time, replacing several first teamers who had been drafted into coach Martin Devaney's starting XI.

Kelland Watts then saw his 53rd minute header cleared a yard off line goal line, before a treble change just after the hour saw Neil Redfearn's side go three at the back.

Newly-arrived striker Luke Charman was twice denied an equaliser by the Tykes 'keeper - only for United to then be caught out at the other end, Rosaire Longelo inadvertently bundling home a Barnsley centre to register another Magpies OG with seven minutes of normal time remaining.

There was no further scoring and the game ending in driving rain with claps of thunder.
