Newcastle's U23 side were in action on Monday, facing their Rotherham
United counterparts on a training pitch adjacent to the Parkgate FC ground at Roundwood Pavilion, near Rawmarsh.
And Neil Redfearn's side made it two wins out of two in pre-season against one
of his old clubs, thanks to late efforts from Rosaire Longelo and Oisin
McEntee.
The game comprised of three thirty minute periods, the
League One Millers fielding a predominantly senior starting XI that included
on-loan Magpie Dan Barlaser for the opening period.
Newcastle's Nathan Harker was the busier of
the two 'keepers in the early stages but the first period ended scoreless
before the visitors came close to
breaking the deadlock when Jack Young's 32nd minute free kick led to Elias
Sorensen angling his drive wide of the target.
Tom Allan then came rather closer on 43 minutes when Sorensen sent over a
cross that Allan met only to see the home goalkeeper deny him from point blank
range.
That proved to be the final meaningful action for both players, replaced by
Rosaire Longelo and Victor Fernandez - the latter making his comeback after
injury sidelined him last season.
Making his entrance shortly after was debutant Kyle Scott, on the day that the
former Chelsea midifelder's permanent move to Tyneside was confirmed.
And it was Scott who helped make the breakthrough on 83 minutes, jinking into
the box and seeing his centre rebound off an opponent to Longelo, who slammed
his eight yard effort through the goalkeeper's legs.
Newcastle sealed victory in the last minute, when Oisin McEntee - back
from representing Ireland at the U19 European Championships - met a corner at the back
post and shot in from close range.
