Although head coach Neil Redfearn was absent on first team duty in China, his new charges opened up their friendly programme with a victory on Monday afternoon.

Blue skies and sunshine greeted the Magpies as they debuted their new home kit at the Hibs training ground, near the town of Tranent in East Lothian.

Although six of their squad are currently with the senior side in Nanjing, the Newcastle side was a familiar one, with all but one of the starting lineup featuring at this level last season.

That new face was a French-speaking central defender who is said to be on trial, and in addition to his obvious aerial threat showed a decent touch on the ball.

Coached by ex-Magpie Lee Makel, Hibs almost made a lightning start to the game, visiting goalkeeper Dan Langley acrobatically tipping over a shot from Fraser Murray after just 40 seconds.

Striker Luke Charman coolly beat Patrick Martin with a 13th minute shot to put United ahead but that lead lasted only eight minutes before winger Jonny Smith - on trial from Bristol City - ended a rapid breakaway from a Newcastle corner by beating Langley at his near post.

The visitors should have gone in ahead at half time - Martin doing well to deflect efforts from both Adam Wilson and Yannick Toure - and the home custodian looked on as Charman shot against a post six minutes after the restart.

When the ball was played back into the area though, good work from Jack Young set up Lewis Cass for a routine low finish from close range to make it 2-1.

Magpies substitute Joe White then came close to sealing victory, but couldn't get enough on his 66th minute strike. The withdrawal of Rosaire Longelo due to a minor injury then saw full back Ryan Barrett return to the field to play out the remainder of the game.
