We Said

Ben Dawson:

"I'm really pleased for the group of lads in there and obviously there’s a few at home that are injured.

"The group as a whole have been fantastic this season, and it’s reward for the effort and the work they have put in over the course of a long season.

"The timing (of the goals) was important.

"We mentioned at half-time about that we had only done half a job so far.

"The quality of the pitch didn’t suit how we like to play and sometimes you have to adapt to that.

"We tried to play a little bit more on the break and we got some opportunities from pressing high up the pitch when they are trying to play and the ball was bobbling around.

"It gave us something to hang on to - they had a bit of a point to prove.

"The result last week, against a very good Manchester United team, gave them a bit of a kick up the backside and a bit of a reminder of where they are at.

"You can’t ease off, you have to keep working hard day-in, day-out, and the response this week in training has been great, so it’s no surprise that we get that display tonight."

A strong second half showing from Newcastle U23s secured a place in the Premier League Cup Final on Tuesday night at the expense of hosts Leeds.

Scoreless after a scrappy opening 45 minutes at Guiseley's Nethermoor, the Magpies were awarded a penalty five minutes after the restart following a coming together between Hugo Diaz and Callum Roberts.

Having missed twice from the spot recently, Owen Bailey gave way to Kelland Watts and he coolly beat Bailey Peacock-Farrell from 12 yards.

That lead was then doubled four minutes later when Roberts seized on a misdirected backpass by Bryce Hosannah and strode forward, jinking past two defenders and lifting the ball over the 'keeper.

With the hosts struggling to make any impact at the other end, the visitors had the ball in the net for a third time when Elias Sorensen fired home but was flagged offside after just mistiming his forward run.

However the Danish striker wasn't to be denied and rounded off the victory four minutes from full time, receiving Jamie Sterry's thrown in down the right before moving infield to fire home his twentieth goal this season from just inside the box.

That completed a miserable night for Leeds followers, who had goaded Sorensen earlier in the game - and provoked a similar response from him.

Ben Dawson's side now face a wait before discovering the identity of their final opponents, with the other Semi-Final not scheduled until Saturday May 4th.

That will be between Swansea City and Everton, following Tuesday's 2-1 victory over Blackburn Rovers by the Toffees in their delayed Quarter Final.

Subject to final confirmation, we understand that a draw will take place to determine which team will enjoy home advantage in the final, which is a one-off tie.
