Newcastle's U23 side made it
into the last four of the Premier League Cup on Monday afternoon, when they
beat Derby County after extra-time at Whitley Park.
Owen Bailey and Matty Longstaff put United two ahead but back came the Rams
with two goals to take it to extra-time before Mo Sangare got the winner after
Bailey's spot-kick was saved.
Two early chances, one for either side, brought fine saves. The first was for
Longstaff who had time to pick his spot but County 'keeper Henrich Ravas made
a fine save from close range in the third minute.
Four minutes later Nathan Harker made a good stop at his near post to keep it
goalless and Bailey made a fine clearance in the 23rd minute as a shot from
Alex Babos looked to be heading in.
In the 39th minute home captain Owen Bailey met a free-kick from Matty
Longstaff to head home from 12 yards out to give the young Magpies the lead.
And three minutes later Longstaff made it 2-0 with a side-footed finish from
the edge of the box into the corner.
The Rams got back into the contest in the 68th minute when Calum Macdonald
scored from a free-kick on the edge of the box.
United responded immediately when Elias Sorensen strode forward and hit a
fierce drive that hit the crossbar from 20 yards after a fine run.
But the visitors levelled in the 76th minute when a defensive mix-up allowed
recently-arrived substitute Josh Shonibare to put the ball in from six yards.
County pressed for a late winner but couldn't find a way through so the tie
went to extra-time.
Five minutes into the first period United were awarded a penalty when Oliver
Walters was fouled and although Bailey saw his kick saved, Sangare followed up
to put the Magpies back into the lead.
Adam Wilson was unlucky to hit the bar after great work from substitute Jack
Young in the 120th minute but Ben Dawson's side kept possession in added time
to hold out for an excellent victory against a very good Derby side who play
one league above them.
A place in the last four is Newcastle's for the first time in three seasons,
having crashed out of the competition at the Quarter Final stage in the last
two seasons, beaten by Reading and Sheffield United respectively.
