Ben Dawson's side were in home league action on Saturday lunchtime, when they beat league leaders Wolves at Whitley Park in a rescheduled game.

Having failed to register victory in the last five meetings of the sides, United made the best possible start with a goal in the first minute.

2-0 ahead soon after, that bright start was enough to claim victory and strengthen our grip on a promotion playoff place, a workmanlike display ensuring a clean sheet and making us the division's top scorers.

United got off to the best possible start, taking the lead after 40 seconds when Tyrique Bartlett marked his first league start of the season by sweeping home Rosaire Longelo's right wing cross.

That lead was then doubled in the seventh minute, when a low drilled left wing cross from Oliver Walters was turned into his own net by Cam John.

Magpies goalkeeper Nathan Harker made a fine point blank save from Goncalves in the 19th minute and Ennis lobbed him seven minutes before the break but also cleared the crossbar.

The visitors started the second half the stronger side and went close with a couple of headers - one over, the other straight at Harker.

John almost completed a memorable double when he sliced a Thomas Allan cross against his own bar with five minutes of normal time remaining, but it ended 2-0.

Premier League 2 Division 2:
   P GD Pts
1.Wolves 19 +22 37
2.Southampton 19 +9 36
3.Newcastle  19 +12 34
4.Reading 19 +9 34
5.Aston Villa 19 +5 33
6.Man United 19 -2 26
7.Stoke City 18 +6 24

The title-winning side gain automatic promotion to Division One, with the next four entering into a playoff to decide the second promotion place.

It's a 22 game season, meaning that one more victory from their remaining three games: Stoke (a), Man United (h) & Middlesbrough (a) - will see the Magpies confirm a playoff place.

Many thanks to GW.
