Ben Dawson's U23s made it into the Quarter Finals of the Premier League Cup on Friday afternoon, thanks to a deserved victory at Woking's Kingfield Stadium.

United went in front in the 22nd minute when Oliver Walters and Matty Longstaff combined for Jamie Sterry (or Steppy if the teamsheet was to be believed) to hit a rising shot into the top right hand corner of the net from the edge of the box.

However, the Royals replied three minutes later, Josh Barrett curling home a free-kick on the edge of the box between Magpies custodian Nathan Harker and his right hand post.

United then restored their lead eight minutes before the break, Thomas Allan firing in from close range after Yannick Toure robbed a Royals defender and his blocked shot was fed by Longstaff to Allan in space on the right of the box.

With one victory for each side in the two league meetings this season, a reaction from the Royals was expected, but aside from one effort that he gathered at the second attempt, Harker was never remotely troubled.

Reading's insistence of playing out from the back continually saw them surrender possession in dangerous areas and in truth Newcastle should have ended the tie as a contest with a third goal.

Coniah Boyce-Clark did well to turn a powerful effort from Longstaff around the post seven minutes after the restart and Toure was later denied from close in.

With Sterry starting after returning from an abortive loan spell at Crewe Alexandra, Elias Sorensen was introduced from the bench following his recall from Blackpool. Callum Roberts - the third loan returnee didn't feature.
