Goals

24 mins Schar brought the ball forward down the United right and played it inside to Issac Hayden, who found Salomon Rondon with a first-time pass. The forward lost possession but Jack Cork's clearance went straight to Javier Manquillo who played it back to Fabian Schar

The Swiss defender strode forward before unleashing an unstoppable pile driver that flew in off the right Leazes upright as Clarets 'keeper Tom Heaton made a despairing dive.
1-0

38 mins Longstaff brought the ball forward after Hayden had won it near the halfway line. He played it to Miguel Almiron who swept the ball out to Ritchie down the left. After a slight mis-control Ritchie's cross was headed away by Ben Mee but only to the feet of Sean Longstaff.

The midfielder steadied himself before lashing a low effort into the far bottom corner and wheeling away in sheer ecstasy.
2-0

We Said

Rafa:

"First half, we had the control and were adapting really well to a very physical team. We scored two good goals. Second half, under pressure, we were managing well - everyone fighting for each other, and I think the fans appreciate that.

"We have a message that is very clear: one game at a time. Why are we winning games now? Because everybody is doing what they have to do and everybody is focused just on the games - and it’s what we have to do against West Ham.

"We cannot think the job is done, no chance. We have confidence and we have to keep going. We can lose games but we have to approach every game with the same mentality and the players know it is like that.

"I know my staff and since a long time ago we have finished stronger at the end of the season. Sometimes you can lose games but we finish stronger.

"Last year we were safe with five games to play. It's something I was expecting and hopefully we can carry on winning games.

"I was talking with Mike Ashley and Lee Charnley so they know what I think so it's not a question to talk about, 'We want one player.' We talk about what we have, what we want to do with the academy, training ground and everything so it's just to ensure that we have a project.

"We can do it. The little things we can improve a lot and hopefully we can but at the moment it's just to enjoy the game and try to prepare the next one which also will be a tough game. 38 points, maybe, that is the target.

"Now you can see the team is strong, the team has balance and that gives us the confidence to approach any game thinking we can score goals and it will be difficult for the opposition to score against us.

"Our position in the table in terms of goals conceded, I think we are fifth. For a team that is at the bottom half, I think that is massive in terms of how solid we are. We needed to score more goals, now we have more chances because the team is solid and we have different kinds of players too.

"We have a lot of positives. The medical staff and staff keep the players fit so we have 24 players available: seven players on the bench and six were left outside.

"I was praising the lads who are not in the squad because they are training hard even though they’re not on the bench.”

On Schar:

"We know he is capable of doing that. On the ball, he is good, and now he is improving in defence and the understanding with the other players is getting better."

On Longstaff:

"He had a yellow card and they were trying to play on him, focusing on his yellow card. So we had to protect him
(by substituting him).

"I said so many times when he was coming and training with us he was doing well and he was lucky enough to make his debut sooner rather than later because of injuries.

"But he deserved to be there and we decided to keep him in the team because he is working hard and playing well and his understanding with
(Isaac) Hayden is quite good.

"We are really pleased. To have a local lad playing is an example to the rest of the players. You can guarantee when you have local players they are cheaper! And, also, they are committed. Both things are important."

They Said

Sean Dyche said:

"It was a bit better second half but first half we were a long way off. Sometimes that can happen.

"Credit to them, I thought they were better in the first half, they were sharper, their anticipation was better, we know the style they want to play and they delivered that better than we did.

"Second half I was pleased with the effect we had on the team because there was a better energy and demand from the team, without being great, but we asked more questions and caused more problems and got them on the back foot more. It was more like we have been playing.

"It was a mixed bag and they deserved to win. Overall their performance was better, but I am not going to start criticising a group who have been unbeaten in eight games and have produced some massive performances and big results.

"It's probably just a reminder more than anything that if you do come off slightly then you don't get anything, I thought that was the case tonight."

Stats

Newcastle won their fourth successive home game in the Premier League, the first time they've achieved that since April 2018.

When were we last this comfortable at the end of matches twice in a row? That's a fairly poor way of ushering in the stat that this win and Saturday's against Huddersfield was the first time we've won successive PL games by more than one goal since December 2013 (3-0 at Crystal Palace followed by 5-1 at home to Stoke City).

Fabian Schar
netted his third goal for the club, all of which have come in the Premier League at SJP, hitting the first and second against Cardiff City here in January. His latest goal was the 750th to be scored in our favour at SJP in the Premier League, coming in the 456th game.

It was also the first we've scored in the PL from outside the box since a memorable long-range effort by Ayoze Perez away at Leicester City last April.

Having broken his senior duck for us at Blackburn Rovers in the FA Cup, Sean Longstaff scored for the first time in the Premier League. That made him the 142nd Magpie to have done so and the first locally born player to notch in the PL since Jack Colback away to Liverpool in April 2016.

Martin Dubravka recorded back to back clean sheets for the first time since December 2018 (1-0 at Huddersfield, 0-0 at home to Fulham).

Following on from the 2-1 victory at Turf Moor in November, the Magpies completed a first league double over Burnley since the 1954/55 season. It was also their second of the season after doing the trick against Huddersfield - matching our 2017/18 tally of two (v Stoke City and West Ham).

Four goals in as many days at SJP has boosted Newcastle's home PL goal tally for the season to 16 and with four games to play given them a better chance of exceeding their 2017/18 return of 21, which was their lowest ever total in the Premier League (less than the previous low of 22, set in 1997/98 and 2006/07).

NUFC after 28 games - selected PL seasons:

2008/09 28 points, 16th, goal difference -11
2015/16 24 points, 19th, goal difference -25
2017/18 29 points, 15th, goal difference -11
2018/19 31 points, 13th, goal difference -8

Clarets @ SJP - last 10:

2018/19 won 2-0 Schar, Longstaff
2017/18 drew 1-1 Lascelles
2014/15 drew 3-3 S.Taylor, Colback, Sissoko
1982/83 won 3-0 Waddle, Varadi, Keegan
1979/80 drew 1-1 Davies
1978/79 won 3-1 Withe, Shoulder, Cassidy
1975/76 lost 0-1
1974/75 won 3-0 Maconald 2, Barrowclough
1973/74 lost 1-2 Macdonald
1973/74 won 2-1 Macdonald, Moncur (TC)

Newcastle's recent revival continued on Tuesday with a second home win and clean sheet in four days, propelling them to thirteenth in the table - their highest placing since back in November.

Memorable strikes from Fabian Schar and Sean Longstaff  were enough to wrap up a seasonal double over the Clarets, a first league defeat of 2019 ending their eight game unbeaten sequence.

A 30-yard thunderbolt from Schar via a post in the 24th minute put the hosts ahead before local lad Longstaff's maiden Premier League goal seven minutes before half-time made it a memorable night.

The roar that greeted the Swiss defender's opener was exceeded when Longstaff rammed the ball in at the Leazes End where he'd almost scored on Saturday, his celebrations accompanied by deafening choruses of "he's one of our own".

Fresh from beating Spurs on Saturday, Burnley showed little appetite for mounting anything other than an aerial bombardment of our box - although they got little joy from a Magpies back three who were all outstanding.

Martin Dubravka made one crucial save to deny Chris Wood just after the opening goal and later , while the inability of James Tarkowski to get his volley on target from just six yards out thankfully saw United go in at the interval still two goals to the good.

Miguel Almiron continued where he left off on Saturday and there were further encouraging moments from a front trio comprising of him, Ayoze Perez and Salomon Rondon - especially in the first half.

The only change from Saturday's XI saw Javier Manquillo in for DeAndre Yedlin while Kenedy, Jonjo Shelvey, Antonio Barreca, Federico Fernandez and Yoshinori Muto all failed to even make the squad.

The searing pace of Almiron almost caused an upset when United were 2-0 up, chasing an apparent lost cause and coming desperately close to beating Clarets custodian Tom Heaton to it.

His best chance of his first goal in England tonight came on 53 minutes though, when Perez's clipped pass sent him scampering clear on goal. However, Heaton came off his line to deny the Paraguayan with his foot at the expense of a corner kick.

The closing 20 minutes saw Sean Dyche's side throw countless high balls forward in an apparent attempt to replicate a Wimbledon game plan from 1988 - 38 year-old Peter Crouch arriving from the bench for a cameo role of the type Mick Harford once thrived on.

Save for one mad scramble in the box late on though, clear-cut chances were in short supply for Burnley and a trio of home substitutions all broke up play and caught the eye in different ways.

Following an apparently accidental elbow by Crouch Mo Diame required treatment on the field and ended up with a bandage wrapped round his head, while Paul "Sergio" Dummett's return after nine games saw him sporting distinctive platinum blonde hair.

Joselu's successful attempt at winning a free kick inside his own half meanwhile looked to have seen him trodden on by an opponent, but referee Craig Pawson declined to do anything about that.

The replacement of Almiron and Longstaff brought standing ovations from a home crowd who had been quiet at times after good early noise. Into five minutes of added time though, the soundtrack was firmly in support of the manager, who took the adulation of the crowd along with his players at full time - Longstaff still grinning from ear to ear.

Results elsewhere left Rafa's side seven points clear of the relegation zone - 13 points from a possible last 18 representing a fairly amazing resurgence since the defeat at Chelsea that left us third bottom.

Almiron's mid-season arrival seems to have put a collective spring in the step on Tyneside, while the emergence of Longstaff and rediscovering the knack of winning at St.James' Park have also elevated the mood significantly round these parts.

Putting daylight between us and the danger zone with ten games left is above all a collective effort though; the likes of Schar and Isaac Hayden now making worthwhile contributions after some previously unconvincing displays.

For the first time this season, the manager has genuine options and selection problems of a positive kind, save for the talismanic Rondon, whose absence would require a radical tactical rethink.

The on-loan striker may not have looked like adding to his goal tally tonight - save for one first half header- but was invariably shackled (and impeded) by two defenders, occupying them without complaint to the benefit of his team mates.

Had we had him - and Almiron - at the start of the season and match fit then, the whole dynamic of this season could have been entirely different rather than enduring a team game winless start.
