Defender Florian Lejeune made a successful playing return on Monday evening, appearing for Newcastle's U23 side after recovering from knee surgery.

With Rafa Benitez looking on, Lejeune completed 45 minutes as scheduled and played his part in helping United's second string extend their unbeaten run.

And although prolific striker Elias Sorensen had a quiet night, team mate Callum Roberts continued his own scoring run and there was a first competitive goal from winger Rosaire Longelo.

Winless in five league games since beating Newcastle last September, the Canaries took a 20th minute lead, Simon Power outpacing the home defence and hitting a low shot across 'keeper Nathan Harker and in via the far post.

The Magpies levelled five minutes before the break when Rosaire Longelo was impeded in the box by Ciaran Jones and Callum Roberts netted powerfully from the spot.

Within five minutes the turnaround was complete, as Longelo shot home from 12 yards to give Newcastle the lead following good work from Sean Longstaff.

Newcastle enjoyed the lion's share of possession in the second half but were unable to find a third goal that would have wrapped up the victory.

Two breakaways in the closing stages saw them come close: Adam Wilson starting and finishing a flowing three man move by heading wide before Liam Gibson's run and cross ended with Mo Sangare wastefully misfiring in front of goal.

Home custodian Harker was never troubled though and United claimed the victory that keeps them sixth in the table, a point off a playoff spot and just five behind current leaders Wolves.
