Newcastle reached the halfway stage of their Premier League Cup group stage campaign on Friday evening with a victory that leaves them level with leaders Southampton - although second on goal difference.

A low-key opening to proceedings saw neither side create anything of note, but that all changed just before the half hour mark, as the hosts created a memorable team goal.

A sweeping move from end to end climaxed with a low, hard cross from the right by Thomas Allan was turned in by Elias Sorensen for his sixteenth of the season.

The visitors' best chance came in the first minute of added time before the break when Leif Davis crossed dangerously from the left but Kun Mihaylov thankfully made a total hash of his header.

Bringing Patrick Bamford off the bench for the second half, Leeds came more into the game and worked the ball into the home area on several occasions without seriously testing goalkeeper Nathan Harker.

Without Callum Roberts in the side, Sorensen remained isolated and had no more chances to increase his tally as the visitors remained in with a shout of a point.   

The victory looked to have been secured with two minutes of normal time left, when Matty Longstaff's jinking run took him into the box and he eventually flicked the ball home via a touch from Adam Wilson. 

However that was belatedly ruled offside - one of several questionable calls from bungling referee Joe Johnson (not the snooker player, although Ben Dawson's evident frustration may result in "four away" when he submits his assessment marks.....) 

Adam Wilson however confirmed the destination of the points in the second minute of added time, picking up possession outside the Leeds box and forcing his way forward before driving the ball home powerfully.

That leaves Ben Dawson's side unbeaten in five league and cup outings and now with just a single defeat in their last ten fixtures.
