Following a 3-1 success at Doncaster Rovers in their opening game, Newcastle's U21s maintained their 100% record in the CheckaTrade Trophy at Meadow Lane on Tuesday evening.

Victory over League Two Notts County means that Ben Dawson's side need only to avoid defeat in their third and final group game at Grimsby Town next month in order to advance to the knockout stages.

The Tyneside Magpies went ahead thanks to a tenth minute penalty conversion from Callum Roberts, after Andy Kellett was adjudged to have fouled Tom Allan in the box. Roberts notched a fifth goal of the season, his effort deflecting in off 'keeper Branislav Pinroch.

The hosts attempted to get back into the tie and visiting custodian Nathan Harker was tested by Nathan Thomas's free kick on the half hour and equal to a long-range effort from Kristian Dennis.

At the other end meanwhile, Elias Sorensen headed a Roberts free kick wide of the target after 34 minutes.

Notts ended the half slightly fortunate to retain a full complement of players; Kellett yellow-carded after conceding the penalty but then later going unpunished for deliberately handling the ball in.

United extended their advantage eleven minutes after the restart when the Longstaff brothers linked up in midfield and Sean's through ball set Sorensen away, the Dane drilling a low effort home for his eighth this season.

He required treatment soon after and was replaced by Adam Wilson before Roberts came close to his second and Newcastle's third of the night - a deflected effort going just a fraction wide.

What proved to the home side's best chance of the game went begging when Shaun Brisley headed wide of the target with seven minutes of normal time to play.
