Newcastle's second string were beaten for the first time this season at the third time of asking on Monday, losing to Wolves at the New Bucks Head ground in Telford.

Nine of the eleven players that started against the mackems last week kept their place, Liam Gibson replacing Jamie Sterry and Sean Longstaff making way for Elias Sorensen.

Given that both Sterry and Longstaff were unused substitutes in the Premier League a day earlier, it's reasonable to assume that they'll be involved against Nottingham Forest on Wednesday.

The Magpies dominated the opening 20 minutes of play and early range-finders from Owen Bailey and Liam Gibson weren't too far off target.

Good combination play between forward duo Elias Sorensen and Luke Charman then presented Thomas Allan with sight of goal in the 16th minute, only for a defender to dispossess him as he shaped to shoot.

Allan did have the ball in the net on 27 minutes when turning home a shot from Callum Roberts, but it was rightly chalked off for offside.

Against the run of the play, Wolves went ahead two minutes later when Niall Ennis tucked a 15 yard shot inside Freddie Woodman's far post.

The hosts then doubled their lead on 50 minutes, Austin Samuels converting a header from close range after a left wing cross from Andrew Harris-Sealey.

All Newcastle could muster in response was a 62nd minute corner from Dan Barlaser that Kelland Watts reached, but could only head straight at the 'keeper.

Looking for a route back into the match, United turned to Adam Wilson and the winger soon had an influence, his ball into the box reaching Roberts, who took a touch before firing wide on 71 minutes.

The visitors continued to press as the game entered its final stages; Bailey heading Barlaser's corner wide and Roberts then missing a golden chance to net when he fired wide with eight minutes left.

Bailey then got his head on another corner in added time, but could only direct the ball into the ground, bouncing up into the arms of Andreas Sondergaard.
