Sunday afternoon saw Newcastle's U23 side
play their second pre-season warm-up game, facing a Hamilton Academical XI at
the Stirling University sports facility in central Scotland.
Coach Ben Dawson travelled with a similar squad to that which had won at
National League Barrow the previous Monday, with Achraf Lazaar featuring once
again (not that he contributed much).
None of the Development Squad players on senior team duty in
Ireland appeared, suggesting that Josef Yarney, Callum Roberts, Sean Longstaff
and Victor Fernandez will feature at Hull on Tuesday.
United had already been forced into a replacement when Deece Kasinga limped
off early on, before Hamilton went ahead on 25 minutes, on-loan Norwich City striker
Mason Bloomfield powering home a
header following a free kick conceded by Liam Gibson.
The black and whites responded almost instantly, but Accies goalkeeper Ryan
Fulton was
equal to Owen Bailey's on-target header from another set piece.
A foot injury meant that first half replacement Adam Wilson failed to reappear
for the second period - one of six interval substitutions for United.
Magpies goalkeeper Otto Huuhtanen was called into action to palm away a long
distance effort on 55 minutes and a Hamilton defender rattled the crossbar
from the resultant corner kick.
The closest Newcastle came to levelling was a 75th minute shot by Stefan
O'Connor that clipped the post, but within two minutes the Accies had doubled
their lead via a well-struck direct free kick by Ross Cunningham.
A rare excursion into the opposition box on 84 minutes saw United pull one
back; the persistence of Elias Sorensen eventually playing Toney in to force a
low effort under the approaching goalkeeper.
Hamilton restored their two goal advantage with three minutes remaining,
Bailey was guilty of a trip in the area and Cunningham added to his free kick
conversion by sending Huuthanen the wrong way from the spot.
