Newcastle bowed out of the Premier League Cup at the Quarter Final stage on Friday night, beaten by the lower league Blades at their adopted home of Stocksbridge.

The home side went ahead in just the third minute when they attacked down the left flank and the ball fell to an unmarked William Portman on the right side of the box.

He miscued his shot across goal, but it fell nicely for striker Tyler Smith to hit a rising shot past Nathan Harker and into the Newcastle net.

Clad in their blue change kit, Newcastle dominated possession for the remainder of the half but had only a misdirected Curtis Good header from a Dan Barlaser corner to show for their efforts.

Bringing Mackenzie Heaney and Ben Kitchen off the bench for the second half, the visitors continued to threaten without creating many clear chances, Harker keeping his side in the tie when he blocked a David Parkhouse effort from close range on the hour.

Newcastle levelled four minutes later, wingers
Heaney and Victor Fernandez swapping sides and the Spanish youngster reaching the byline on the right before sending over a centre that was fumbled over the goal line by Blades custodian Marcus Dewhurst for an OG.

The Magpies then seemed set to go on and win the tie, Mo Sangare clearing the crossbar when Fernandez sent him through one on one with Dewhurst.

However the Blades netted what proved to be the winner with 13 minutes remaining, Smith bursting into the box and stylishly driving the ball
home with the Toon defence left flat-footed.

Newcastle's attempts to force extra time proved to be fruitless, centre forward Luke Charman shooting wide late on and five minutes of injury time
passing without any further threat or great urgency from the visitors.
