Newcastle's U23 side slipped to
a third successive Premier League 2 defeat on Monday night, beaten by Wolves
at the New Bucks Head ground of Telford AFC.
A scoreless first half saw chances for either side at a premium, Nathan
Harker's poor clearance in the 44th minute was passed to Jose Xavier - only for
the Wolves striker to scuff his shot straight at the grateful 'keeper.
A half-chance presented itself for the visitors nine minutes after the
restart, when a Callum Roberts shot from the edge of the box was turned away by Jon Flatt for a corner.
When that corner was only half cleared, a poor punch by the Wolves custodian
was thumped straight back at him and then Jack Hunter hit the subsequent
rebound well off target.
Wolves went ahead in the 56th minute, when Xavier met a cross from Oskar Buur
at the near post to turn the ball past Harker.
Clad in their blue change kit, United almost levelled just after the hour when
Tyrique Bartlett's flick rebounded back off the crossbar to Owen Gallacher,
who was unable to force the rebound home.
However, the home side doubled their lead with 16 minutes remaining, a cross
from the left flank by Will Randall-Hurren ending up in the back of the net
with Curtis Good getting the last touch as it ricocheted into the top
corner, leaving Harker flat-footed.
And there was to be no way back from that for the Magpies, as old boy Scott
Sellars saw his Wolves side complete a seasonal double and Newcastle lost away
from home for the fifth successive time.
