United's seven game
winning run in all competitions came to an abrupt end on Monday night, as a
goal in each half by the visitors deservedly saw the points heading to Sussex
at full time.
What proved to be an all-too rare scoring chance for the home side saw
Owen Gallacher denied from close in on ten minutes - only for Brighton to
net from their first meaningful attack moments later.
The visitors led at in the interval thanks to that low effort from Aaron
Connery and only a reflex stop by Magpies goalkeeper Nathan Harker denied the
Albion striker a second on 58 minutes.
However Harker was unable to prevent a second goal seven minutes later;
blocking an initial effort from Max Sanders only for team mate Tyler Forbes to
force the rebound in at the second attempt.
A 50/50 challenge between United's Owen Bailey and Archie Davies then saw the
visiting player stretchered off although the referee dismissed calls for a
card, his comment that "it was a proper tackle" clearly
audible to those present.
Harker then got a foot in the way of a low Sanders shot deep into seven
minutes of additional time, before the home side passed up the chance of a
consolation goal during the final seconds - Tyrique Bartlett and Victor
Fernandez both seeing close range shots blocked.
