It's now four wins in five league and cup fixtures for
Newcastle's second string,
following a routine victory over basement side West Bromwich Albion at Whitley Park on
Friday evening.
A small crowd braved sub-zero temperatures but had very little to entertain
them in the opening period, with neither goalkeeper called into meaningful
action.
Five minutes into the second half, Magpies defender Kyle Cameron met a
Callum Roberts corner, but his powerful header cannoned off the Albion crossbar and was cleared after a brief scramble.
The deadlock was finally broken on 66 minutes when Luke Charman drew a
penalty from Kyle Jameson, which Callum Roberts hit firmly down the middle.
United then doubled that lead from their next attack, when Roberts tried his luck
with a dipping effort from outside the box that went through Baggies'
'keeper, Brad House, and trickled in.
Having won 4-0 at The Hawthorns in August, Newcastle looked set to rack
up a similar margin of victory here, but failed to do so despite enjoying extended
periods of possession and restricting the visitors to occasional counter
attacks.
In addition to three welcome points, there was also a successful return for Paul
Dummett, the fulll back completing an hour for his first game time since the first day of the Premier League season.
