Peter Beardsley's U23 side slumped to their sixth straight away defeat in all competitions on Friday afternoon, beaten by an in-form Fulham side at their Motspur Park home in South West London.

A less experienced squad was selected for the game, Jamie Sterry, Henri Saivet, Massadio Haidara and Jack Colback all dropping out of the side that defeated Reading 4-1 at Whitley Park on Monday.

United's Victor Fernandez had two efforts at goal on seven minutes, shooting over before collecting a wayward goal kick from Luca Ashley-Hammond. Sadly the Spanish youngster was unable to direct his second shot on target either and the chance went.

Seeking a fourth successive home victory, Fulham's Jon Dagur Thorsteinsson tested Freddie Woodman in the 21st minute but saw his 12 yard effort blocked.

And back at the other end, Callum Roberts wasn't far away from scoring for a third game in a row, Ashby- Hammond saving a 20 yarder at the foot of the post.

Following treatment for Tom Heardman and several interruptions before Fulham's Aron Davies went off, eight minutes of added time were played - during which Dan Barlaser shot narrowly over from distance and a deflected Roberts effort tested the 'keeper.

In the final seconds of that additional eight minutes however the Cottagers edged ahead, Michael Elstone bundling home Adebayo's left wing cross.

And the home side extended their advantage within the first minute of the second half, Elstone the provider this time for Adebayo to slot home.

Recently-arrived replacement Luke Charman then had a sight of goal but shanked his 50th minute effort wide. He was more accurate 12 minutes later, heading a Yasin Ben El-Mhanni centre past the home 'keeper, only for Robert Atkinson to clear off the line.

With 20 minutes remaining the Adebayo/Elstone partnership paid further dividends for Fulham, as Elstone grabbed his second of the afternoon from around the same short distance as the first.

Elstone then came close to completing his hat-trick only to be denied by a defender's saving tackle.

The blue-clad Magpies played out four minutes of added time a man short, when Roberts limped off with what looked like a hamstring pull after all three substitutes had been used.
