(*Matty Longstaff played 45 minutes at Ashington and came back on later for another 5
minutes)
Pre-season preparations for
Newcastle's reserve side continued on Tuesday evening, with a
comfortable friendly victory
against Northern League side Ashington at Woodhorn Lane.
A year to the day that they had lost 0-1 at the same venue, a youthful Magpies
selection returned to give a rather better account of themselves - none of the
fourteen players used during the 2016 loss involved tonight.
With a large pool of players to select from, coach Peter Beardsley returned to
what is almost an U21 side, compared to the U23 group that took part in the
Whitby Tournament a few days previously.
And having caught the eye at the NI Super Cup, Lewis Cass, Adam Wilson and Matty
Longstaff were all added to the squad that drew 0-0 at fellow Northern League
side Whitley Bay a week earlier.
Defender Owen Bailey gave the blue-clad Magpies an early lead when he headed
home Mackenzie Heaney's corner and Heaney again claimed a later assist when
Wilson tapped in from close range.
The half ended as it had started, with Bailey converting a header from a flag
kick to give the visitors a three goal advantage.
Lewis McNall then began the second period with a bang, turning in the box
before sending a perfectly flighted effort over 'keeper Conor Grant and into the
net within a minute of the restart.
Steve Harmison's side hit back quickly when Lee McAndrew intercepted an
attempted pass out of defence and shot past Nathan Harker on 50 minutes.
And the Colliers clawed another goal back later in the half, when recent
signings Lewis Strafford and Tony Stephenson combined for the latter to net.
