A second half brace from Luke
Charman was enough to see United's reserve side qualify for the knockout stages of the Premier League
Cup on Tuesday.
Senior players Matz Sels and Massadio Haidara were included in the starting
lineup at Whitley Park, Peter Beardsley's side needing maximum points to
guarantee their progress at the expense of the visitors.
Luke Charman broke the deadlock in the 65th minute, immediately after
arriving from the bench. He let fly with a rocket shot from the edge of the penalty area and the ball streaked into the
far corner of the net.
And striker Charman got his second five minutes from the end when he picked
up the ball on the half way line and set off on a run towards the Saints goal.
With defenders struggling in his wake desperately trying to catch him, he
took the ball into the box before rifling a shot home, low into the right
hand corner of the net to ensure that Newcastle would top Group A.
The 32 team competition continues with the following 16 teams playing a one-off
knockout game:
Blackburn, Brighton, Charlton or Boro
