7 mins:
Carr shot 1-0
A ground nicknamed The Morgue proved to be the graveyard for Newcastle's Senior Cup ambitions on Thursday evening - but only after 120 minutes of play and no less than 24 penalty kicks. With the scores tied at 1-1 after 90 minutes, neither side could make the decisive breakthrough in 30 minutes of additional time, meaning a shootout to determine who would advance to the Final. That ended 10-9 to the Northern League hosts, who earned the chance to defend the title they won last season against either Blyth Town or Blyth Spartans. On a bitterly cold night with occasional snow flurries, Shields went ahead on seven minutes when a corner was played in and fumbled by 'keeper Nathan Harker, Ryan Carr turning the loose ball home. A rare Newcastle attack in the 29th minute saw Haris Vuckic round Robins custodian Kyle Hayes but hesitate rather than shoot and allow the 'keeper to recover. Full value for their lead, Shields almost doubled it seconds before the break when Lee Mason seized on a backpass and made for goal but put his shot wide. United levelled on 49 minutes when Dan Barlaser's low centre from the left found Vuckic in the box and he turned and poked the ball home for a second goal in as many games since returning to the side following his loan spell at Bradford City. From then on the black and whites dominated the tie and victory seemed inevitable, although prolonged possession didn't translate into clear-cut chances. A late spurt from the home side to try and avoid extra time saw substitute Gareth Bainbridge denied from point-blank range by Harker but five added minutes brought no resolution. The balance of play remained in favour of Newcastle, with Hayes tested by Yasin Ben El-Mhanni and Lewis McNall in the first period of extra-time. A tiring Shields side saw out the second 15 minutes to force penalties and after all 22 players had their go and two on each side missed, the shootout began again with the scores locked at 9-9. Magpies midfielder Jack Hunter had put his side ahead first time round, but Hayes guessed right to deny him before Gary Ormston beat Harker to prompt a pitch invasion from home followers. Biffa |
