Half time:
Newcastle 0 Wolves 0
Former Magpie colleagues Peter Beardsley and Scott Sellars looked on as their sides cancelled each other out in an uneventful night at Whitley Park - and doubtless both wished they were still playing.... The point extended our unbeaten home league run to seven games so far this season, while there was a third successive clean sheet for 'keeper Rob Elliot as he continues to gain match fitness. However the small crowd present on a chilly night saw remarkably little to warm them up; the opening 45 minutes almost totally devoid of goalmouth action. Tom Heardman has scored seven goals in all competitions this season, but was withdrawn at half time having barely had sight of goal or benefited from any tangible support from those around him. Elliot made his first notable stop on the hour to deny Duckens Nazon and kept out efforts by Joe Delacoe and Daniel Armstrong in the final five minutes as Wolves looked to snatch the victory that would have taken them above United into third place. The Magpies almost won it in added time when the
visitors lost possession in their own half, but although Lewis McNall's ball
reached fellow substitute Craig Spooner in the box, his low effort was deflected narrowly past
the far post. |
