A seventh goal of the season in all competitions
from Callum Roberts was enough to extend United's winning run at the expense
of the Seagulls on Saturday.
The Magpies reserves remain second in the Premier League 2 table behind
Swansea City, following a fourth successive victory and they've now lost just
one of their last dozen league and cup fixtures.
Roberts ended a typical solo run by powering a low shot beyond goalkeeper Rob
Sanchez on 14 minutes; both he and forward Tom Heardman missing subsequent
chances to extend that lead.
Albion were handed a route back into the game when goalkeeper Rob Elliot
impended Connor Tighe in the box and referee Andy Miller awarded a penalty.
However James Tilley struck the woodwork from 12 yards; as did Newcastle's
Liam Smith from open play later in the second half at the other end.
The visitors felt hard done by on 80 minutes when a curling effort from Max
Sanders beat Elliot before bouncing down on the goal line. However the
officials ignored Albion claims that the ball had crossed the line and with no
goal line technology, the game continued.
