It's
now three wins in succession for Newcastle's
U23 side, after they deservedly collected the points from a Premier League Cup
tie staged at the Twerton Park home of non-league Bath City on Monday
afternoon.
Getting underway in bright sunshine, City defender Kodi Lyons-Foster earned
himself a booking within the first five minutes for a poor tackle on Sean
Longstaff.
That failed to deter United's leading scorer though and he moved on to double
figures for the season on 19 minutes with a low left footer from 25 yards
out.
Following some brief pressure from the home side that saw Shawn McCoulskey
head wide from a corner kick, Longstaff then had sight of goal on 40 minutes -
only for a City defender to head his effort wide.
However, United went in at half time two goals up when Jamie Holmes pushed down
the left flank before sending over a low cross for Luke Charman to drive home
from inside the six yard box.
A low-key second period saw neither goalkeeper tested and City make a couple
of replacements before United brought on Callum Roberts for Yasin El-Mhanni.
The visitors briefly went down to ten men when Callum Williams was treated for
a bloody nose, the defender soon returning to action with a replacement black
and white shirt numbered 13.
Newcastle's Holmes then found himself in a
shooting position with 14 minutes remaining but failed to test
Ivan Lucic, Owen Bailey and Roberts both sending efforts wide of the goal in
the closing stages.
Those missed chances could have been expensive, with City grabbing a goal back
when Diego De Girolamo shot past Nathan Harker on 85 minutes.
Aside from one late free kick that ran across the United area with nobody on
hand to finish though, Peter Beardsley's side secured a victory that
was more comfortable than the scoreline suggests - despite City fielding seven
players with senior team experience.
Longstaff's goal rush:
19.09 Brighton & Hove Albion (a) won 2-1 scored 2
22.09 Sheffield United (h) lost 0-2 scored 0
26.09 Swansea City (h) won 3-2 scored 1
30.09 Swansea City (h) drew 0-0 scored 0

28.10 Hartlepool United (h) 5-1 scored 3
