Despite another goal from top scorer Sean Longstaff, Newcastle's U23 side lost under the lights to Fulham at their Motspur Park training ground on Monday night.

Clad in their blue and orange kit, the first opportunity of note saw United's Luke Charman force home 'keeper Marcus Bettinelli to concede a 12th minute corner.

Team mate Liam Gibson wasn't too far away with an effort from distance soon after but the Cottagers went ahead on 21 minutes from the spot, after Freddie Woodman upended Cauley Woodrow in the area.

Yellow-carded, Woodman was unable to keep out Woodrow's penalty but within a minute of the restart had pulled off a fine stop to deny Woodrow again.

Bettinelli twice denied Sean Longstaff shortly after the half hour - the second save a superb piece of work to palm over a fierce rising drive after Dan Barlaser and Jamie Holmes combined well to set up the chance.

That deficit was erased just three minutes after the break though, Longstaff scoring at the second attempt after Bettinelli blocked his initial effort. Five of our 12 league goals this season have come from the 18 year-old, who has netted in each of the last four matches.

Looking to restore their lead, Fulham threatened again after 70 minutes when Edun's cross reached Woodrow - whose header was comfortably taken by Woodman.

There was then a first reserve appearance of the season for young Magpie Mackenzie Heaney, who replaced the ineffective Yasin Ben El-Mhanni.

Fulham regained the lead with ten minutes remaining, when Stevie Humphrys latched on to a loose ball and beat Woodman with a low drive - continuing his run of goals against us, after grabbing two in the previous meeting of the sides on Tyneside last February.

The Whites finished strongly and after Jozabed Sanchez Ruiz saw his 85th minute shot disallowed for offside, Humphrys struck the base of the post in added time.
