A neat chip from Callum Roberts ultimately
proved sufficient to see off the Swans at Whitley Park on Monday night - and
put an end to Newcastle's epic search for a reserve team victory on home
soil.
Since beating Wolves 2-1 in December 2015, Peter Beardsley's side had made
seven fruitless attempts in league and cup games at securing that elusive
win.
And for most of a tepid first half that record hardly looked in danger of
ending, with the visitors creating most of the chances - but ballooning a
succession of shots way over Freddie Woodman's crossbar.
A breakthrough came though two minutes before the interval when Roberts
gained possession down United's right flank and found Sean Longstaff,
who drove home from inside the box for a third goal in as many games.
Referee Anthony Backhouse then took centre stage seven minutes after the
break, firstly denying what looked like a good penalty shout for a trip in
the box - before pointing to the spot seconds later at the other end after
Roberts was upended by the City 'keeper.
Dan
Barlaser took the penalty and although his first effort hit Gregor
Zabret, the ball fell nicely for the midfielder to tuck home the rebound.
Having created the first two goals, Roberts then got on the scoresheet himself in the 63rd minute,
robbing a defender midway in the City half and scurried towards goal before
calmly chipping the 'keeper.
That three goal advantage lasted just three minutes, until a Daniel James
shot was parried by Woodman, falling for George Byers to ram the ball over
the line.
And the Jacks reduced the arrears further in the 88th minute, a goalmouth scramble
ending with
Botti Biabi heading in from close range.
However they pressed in vain for an equaliser, Byers unable to keep his shot
down when he had clear sight of goal during five minutes of injury time
during which Woodman was booked for time-wasting.
PS: In addition to giving home reserve followers a rare victory to savour,
Newcastle's success tonight also gave them back to back second string league
victories for the first time since November/December 2014.
That winless home run:
Dec 2015 Wolves (h) won 2-1
Jan 2016 Derby County lost 1-3
Feb 2016 Stoke City (h) lost 1-2
Feb 2016 Fulham (h) lost 0-3
