A brace from Sean Longstaff was enough to give United's reserve side
their second away win of the season, accounting for the Seagulls at their
adopted home of Crawley Town's Broadfield Stadium*.
Clad in their blue and orange change strip, it took Peter Beardsley's side
just six minutes to go ahead, Longstaff lifting his effort over the
approaching goalkeeper, Robert Sanchez.
A first half of few chances ended with Newcastle's Callum Roberts working a
shooting chance only to blast wide of the target - before unwittingly coming
even closer when a clearance from the home 'keeper deflected off him but
unfortunately cleared the bar.
Both sides made enforced substitutions due to injury, United's Jack Hunter
replaced by Michael Newberry.
An improvement by the home side after the break resulted in Magpies 'keeper
Freddie Woodman becoming involved, but he was still untested until midfielder
Joe Ward fired past him on 74 minutes.
Within 90 seconds the visitors had restored their advantage though, Longstaff
on target once again.
Roberts had the first shooting chance and Sanchez parried but only succeeded
in setting up "Lobby" to convert and match his competitive goal
tally from the whole of last season.
Albion substitute Jonah Ayunga had the chance to level in added time when he
met Ben White's cross, but couldn't get his first-time effort on target and
United safely saw out the remaining seconds.
