We Said

Peter Beardsley:

"We started off really well in the first ten minutes, but the goal changed the game. It's a strike from nothing, and it's a good strike, very powerful.

"Freddie
(Woodman) was disappointed in himself, and actually told the lads it was his fault, but I think he's being a bit harsh on himself if I'm honest, because it was very powerful.

"They slowed the game down after that, and took as long as they could over everything. It's a shame for their first lad that got injured (Tom Edwards) so really sad about that, but the other ones, I'm hoping they're minor for them.

"They obviously slowed the game down to their pace, but we got the goal. We were outstanding in the second half. There was a good reaction from the players. Their attitude was good in the first half, but we just lost our way after the first ten minutes.

"But for the last 45 minutes the game was played in one half, so fair play to them, they've had a go and that's all we ever ask.

"Callum Roberts scored a great goal, and for me he could have scored an even better one before that when Sean played him clear - he should have shot. Your best chance is always your first chance, whether you're Lionel Messi, Ronaldo or Suarez, and I told him that.

"Up until we scored the goal, the goalkeeper didn't really have a save to make, for all the possession we had. But we had a right go, and they deserved at least a draw and probably more.

"It was a 50/50 as to whether to go with Callum in the first half, but we did think we needed Liam there to give Sadio a bit of help. But in hindsight we didn't, because Sadio was outstanding.

"When he came in at half time, he asked me if he could stay on. He's been out for a long time, but he's been amazing with us. He's been outstanding. He's on a long road back, but he was there at the final whistle saying well done to the lads, and that means a lot.

"For me, that sums up his character, sums up what kind of person he is, so fair play to him. He's a great lad."

A late leveller from substitute Callum Roberts saw Newcastle reserves salvage a point at Whitley Park on Monday, but they were unable to make their advantage count and claim all three.

Ex-Magpie Glyn Hodges was in charge of the Potters and gave his half time team talk with City a goal ahead, after Belgian teenager Julien Ngoy turned and shot past Freddie Woodman on sixteen minutes. Less pleasantly, Hodges saw Tom Edwards stretchered off after an innocuous incident.

United included Massadio Haidara and the defender (pictured above) completed 45 minutes for his first pitch time since an abortive reserve team comeback last November. Meanwhile, there was a second successive 90 minute shift for the injury-plagued Curtis Good

His replacement for the second half was forward Roberts and his arrival sparked United into life, Luke Charman shooting narrowly over from distance before striking the crossbar on 51 minutes.

Grimly defending their lead, City were reduced to ten men for the last 24 minutes, former AFC Wimbledon player Ryan Sweeney shown a second yellow by referee Johnson for grabbing Charman.

Roberts was then denied by Harry Isted but eventually levelled in the 86th minute, taking a pass from Sean Longstaff before converting a low left footer.

The goalscorer then turned provider for Jamie Holmes to see an effort bundled off the line and in added time Roberts had a swerving goalbound shot beaten away one-handed by Isted.

After a run of three consecutive away fixtures to start their season, United returned to the familiar surroundings of the Northumberland FA HQ, which had been out of use since close season pitch improvements (fellow tenants West Allotment Celtic also played their opening games elsewhere).
