Newcastle's U23 side lost for the first time this season on Monday night,
failing to recover from conceding twice in just seven first half
minutes.
The Magpies debuted at Dagenham & Redbridge's Victoria Road home (aka the Chigwell Construction
Stadium for sponsorship purposes) in search of a second successive away win
following last week's victory at Norwich.
Despite fielding Adam Armstrong however, Peter Beardsley's side failed to
provide much attacking threat before going behind after 29 minutes.
Defender Lubo Satka fouled Martin Samuelsen in the area and home forward Toni
Martinez beat Freddie Woodman from the spot to put the Hammers ahead.
Marcus Browne then doubled their lead nine minutes before the interval with a
low shot before missed a further scoring opportunity just before half time.
The visitors enjoyed their best spell of the evening following the restart
with Sean Longstaff and Haris Vuckic both testing goalkeeper Nathan Trott.
Peter Beardsley introduced Tom Heardman and Dan Barlaser from the bench, but
it was West Ham who extended their lead on 70 minutes, Martinez netting his
second of the evening.
Playing only his second game after missing a full season due to injury,
Heardman did notch a first competitive goal since March 2015 after shooting
home from inside the area on 82 minutes.
However that was as good as it got for Newcastle, who are on the road again in
their next match, facing Aston Villa in a 3pm kick-off at Villa Park on Bank
Holiday Monday (29th).
